I have noticed that my new steed rattles some times on start-up, mainly from the right side. It goes away after a second or two, and it doesn't do it every time. Has any body else experienced this?

Yep, to me it sounds like the timing chain before the tensioners take up all the slack. At Garmisch the BMW techie said that the tensioners tension up the chain quite quickly because they are both positioned so that the oil that remains in them when the engine is switched off doesn't drain away as much as previous models. So, when the engine starts up the oil pressure gets the tensioner up to pressure quicker. He sounded quite pleased with the tensioner design.
My K1200R had a tensioner update to avoid this but that design doesn't appear on this engine.

I assume this only happens after being parked for a while? i.e over night or a couple of days?

Mine does it as well, just as slight noise, hopefully nothing to worry over!

These questions are giving us LC owners a reputation on here. Please stop with the madness.:rob:D

Yes....its ruining the image of the rufty tufty, travel the world, ride anywhere, through anything, take everything the environment can through at us, Macho GS riders...into...

...whinging, whiny, "switches too flimsy, too far apart, pedals to small, bike makes my clothes dirty, too noisy, oh no...is that a clunk in my gearbox, side stand is too upright....etc...etc...." Old Women!

Its a brilliant bike - do anything, go anywhere.
Just ride it !

Mine rattles too. Only for a second or two, but it's there.

I didn't like to say anything for fear of being shouted at (I'm very sensitive) anyway, I've said it now so you can all fuck off.*

*Are we allowed to swear on here? I bloody hope so.

They all do that, sir...

Not just the LC - All boxer GS's rattle, and some more than others.
Especially at startup.

It does come as a suprise if youve had jap fours or a K-series BM in the past.
After my Thundercat, the GS felt like a too-tall washing machine filled with bolts - but then you come up to a roundabout, drop it in, gas the throttle and start smiling....

You do get used to it eventually.

Yeh, mine rattles for a couple of seconds before the oil pressure gets into the head gear.

But so what, the motor is under no load at that point so it's not a wear issue, it won't hurt, just sounds a bit naf for a couple of secs. :thumb

The motor is fine, just imagine what it is like inside those cam covers at full revs....very busy me-thinks! :roll

Mine don't rattle :D

You should hear the KTM 1190 on startup:eek::D

I've had that 1-2 sec of rattle at startup from the day I picked it up.

Doesn't bother me, mind.
