Engine rattle on start-up

You should hear the KTM 1190 on startup:eek::D

Had the first service Sat at 'Stormers near Alton. All done clean as a whistle. While I was waiting and walking around I spotted an 1190 hidden up the side that I asked about assumming one of the staff had one that was hid away during the day.

I didn't try one but reckon they would be a good ride, albeit not so polished as the GS. At some point I'll blag a test ride. Anyways, it was only a month or so old, traded in for a GS. Someone took it on a tour and knew after 3 days they would be trading it in.

I know some here are having a rough time with a few quality issues (fingers crossed, not me), but it's obviously not rosey for all in the Orange camp too.

I'm just saying :blagblah:blagblah.

Yeh, mine rattles for a couple of seconds before the oil pressure gets into the head gear.

But so what, the motor is under no load at that point so it's not a wear issue, it won't hurt, just sounds a bit naf for a couple of secs. :thumb

The motor is fine, just imagine what it is like inside those cam covers at full revs....very busy me-thinks! :roll

I had a MK11 1600E that rattled on startup before the oil pressure got around, that was a wear issue as it thru a rod later on!. Not saying the GSLC is about to do that, but just imagine if yours was the only GS to rattle on startup and you didn't ask and thought it was normal...

Nope, still not necessarily a wear issue, how would a top end wear rattle cause a rod to let go?

Rods usually let go because of high revs or more often metal fatigue.

Unless of course the rattle was a cracked piston, but that would not go quiet after the oil pressure came up, then the piston would let go initially thus causing the rod to fail in the ensuing mayhem!

I had a rod let go on two occasions on my old pre-unit triumph 650 bonnie. Absolute carnage...you could see all of the inside from the outside after the blow-up, through the big hole in the crankcase.

I also had a lotus Elan do the same, but piston failure caused the rod to fail, leaving a big hole in the block!

On both occasions probably brought on by poor materials and maybe too many revs, and possibly poorly balanced crank assemblies :blast

Who said anything about a "top end rattle" ? . I think you have missed my point. I only asked if others have the same startup rattle as me, that's all.
Thanks anyway.

Mine don't rattle :D

Either you don't own a GS, or you need a hearing test - or you've not started the engine.

Actually, I partially agree, the earlier 1200's are a fair bit quieter.
And the old airheads do sound better.

But generally, the GS engine is a fairly rattly lump.

If you look into every bmw bike forum here, you will find comments about rattling engines.

It's nothing new, or to be worried about, unless it gets worse under load.

I guess not. There's blinkered and then there's nutty. :mmmm

I'm very flattered that some of the new KTM riders here seem to be following my posts in the LC section. But, when I heard an 1190 on tickover the other day, it sounded like a bag of spanners in a washing machine. This is a fact.:rob I have nothing against KTM, and may even buy one before the end of the year.:rob But not an 1190.:P
