Engine replaced

I have a March 13 Gs that had a full engine and drive train replaced due to corrosion in Oct 14. This second engine and drive train is now in the same corroded state. What if anything can I expect this time around. I do ride all year round and keep the bike garaged when not in use. Regularly washed with car shampoo and a sponge nothing else. Will BMW replace again or have i no come back. Still love the bike and would buy another one tomorrow but i spent years saving for this one. Any knowledgible advice welcome.

Corrosion on engine

Hi,if you look at my other posts i bought a 9 month old 150 miles gs last year when cleaning it weeks later i noticed small bits of corrosion,to cut along story short its going in next week for dealer to let bmw have a look he s not to confident in getting anything because its not bad?????,watch this space,i am looking into rejecting bike to see if that hurrys them up its a shame because bike is superb otherwise.

I think it is reasonable to expect to be able to make a goodwill claim

What condition is the rest of the bike in or have you only had corrosion issues with the engine/transmission ?

The corrosion on my bike isn't "bad" - I've seen worse ones for sale in the dealers showroom - but BMW have decided to fit a new engine and swing arm.

The black paint is supposed to be much better, but AJ's would only order an identical silver engine. It's going in on Tuesday for it fitting

I don't ride in winter much and the bike is kept clean, salt-free and plastered with plenty of FS365 etc., but I guess my cold, damp concrete garage isn't doing it any good

Two points - the replaced parts will have a 12 month warranty and as it seems that they were fitted over 12 months ago the dealer may try to wriggle out using that excuse. Don't be deterred. I'd suggest that legislation protects you and the engine and drivetrain are expected to be of appropriate quality - clearly they are not. Perhaps take advice from Trading Standards or similar so that you are prepared. Have you extended the BMW warranty? I had the shaft drive housing/rear drive on a K1300GT replaced on two occasions due to corrosion, and it was the extended warranty that was covering the bike both times.

Secondly, did you use any winterising treatment such as ACF 50?

My understanding is that if parts are replaced under warranty then the warranty offered is only that remaining on the replaced item.

i.e. if an engine is replaced in month 23 then the warranty period on the new engine is 1 month (assuming original warranty was for 24 months). If you contributed for the replacement then that is a different story.

Parts purchased by or contributions made by the owner towards a repair carry a 24 month Parts Warranty unless BMW have recently reduced that to 12 months and nobody told me?

It is interesting to note that some bikes that are well looked after also suffer, my 2013 bike's rear drive started to bubble up even though I was scrupulous with cleaning and protecting with FS365. This leads me to believe that there was something fundamentally wrong with the silver paint or the way it was applied. Simon Weir from Ride Magazine reckoned that it was all down to our salty roads but I disagree, there is more to it than that.

Supposedly the black paint is better but time will tell - I don't like black painted engines because if they do corrode they look even worse than the silver ones.

This is what i expected. The first engine was acf50 treated regularly and still corroded so was replaced with 22klm on clock and second engine now has 14klm up and no acf50 used and corrosion not quite as bad. So I guess I have to suck it up. Only other problem was a left handlebar switch replaced under warranty. The second engine has a much smoother gear change and nicer character if not quite as fast to spin up.

Indeed there is .... I know of bikes that have corroded and have never been ridden on a salty road

The black engined one has a far more durable engine finish and is 'textured', whereas the silver engined bike, the paint is a smooth finish

Are they 1200s with water based paint? Hopefully the 'new black' paint is better.

From the age when they used proper paint - not the kindergarten water based stuff.
My 2005 R12GS has a finish waaaay better than many of the later bikes

No doubt the move to waterbased paints is down to an EU directive so I wonder if the big 4 have to do the same when importing bikes made in Japan or if it's just bikes manufactured/companies based in the EU that have to use waterbased paints?

Yes indeed, mine for one, always garaged and never seen a salty road and only very rarely a wet one but I had to have my engine replaced due to corrosion last October.

So moral of the story is always make a small contribution to get the extended warranty?

Nope it is integral to the house so is always dry and never overly cold.
