Eratic tickover 1200GS.......

My 2004 R1200GS starts and runs fine, however after a couple of miles the tickover raises steadily, so that I have no engine braking, and if I stop at a junction or lights and pull in the clutch the engine revs rise to about 4 or 5 thousand revs and doesn't fall.

If I switch the ignition off then start the engine back up the tickover drops to a steady 1 thousand rpm ish, but when I ride away the tickover soon rises again.

Has anyone else had this problem? I suspect it could be the stepper motor not returning the throttle correctly, but would like any advice you can offer before I start spending money.

I guess that you are correct - the stepper motor. As it resets itself when you turn it off and thereafter fails to perform reliably
 
i suspect its the symptom not the fault, something is making the system open the throttle, a GS911 will diagnose, my moneys on a sensor somewhere unless the ECUs had it

Thanks All for the replies. I don't think it's the throttle cable sticking, because when the tickover rises, switching the ignition off, then restarting returns the tickover to normal without moving the throttle or cable.

I assume the stepper motors are the black plastic units situated inboard of the throttle bodies on each side? Is these a simple way of testing these?

It does sound likely that a sensor somewhere is either giving a bad reading, or correctly identifying an issue which shows up in this way. Does anyone have enough knowledge of this system to suggest where I might start looking?

Try checking the throttle cable on the R/H side of the bike under the tank where it enters the junction box.

The stepper motors won't make the bike rev to 4K-5K. Unplug them and see if it makes any difference.

Try checking the throttle cable on the R/H side of the bike under the tank where it enters the junction box.

I had a similar problem on my old GS, the fault was inside the throttle cable splitter box where one cable was slipping off the plastic cam.
 
As per the last two responses...............

As per the last two responses, the fault was in the cable. The main throttle cable was coming unravelled where it meets the drum inside the splitter box. This bulking up of the cable was preventing the drum returning to it's closed position.

Just lookad at prices for a new cable! BMW Dealer £ 42.80 inc Vat but don't keep them in stock! Motorworks £ 47.90 plus delivery but not in stock!

I can't remember ever paying over a fiver for a throttle cable before!
