Not an 1200 rider yet (still happy with my f800gs) but i may need to move up to carry a passanger with luggage. I have tried the 1200gs and gsa twin cams and was shown the ESA button, soft - normal - sport. I did not find it made much difference. However I have just read a Launch note by BMW on the Allan Jefferies web site it states by keeping pressure on the button the spring rate is altered for off road riding or two up touring etc.
Its not a function I found on the test bikes, is it still there?

The site is giving badly worded information. Holding the ESA button does not alter the spring rate, how could it actually alter the physical characteristics of a metal coil spring?

What it does is alter the hydraulic pressure inside the preload unit, compressing the spring and using up some of its natural travel in return for increased stiffness or a change of ride height.

Yes.

On the move you can change the damping setting between comfort, normal and Sport.

Whilst stationary you can change the preload setting between solo, solo + Luggage, Solo + Passenger, Solo + Passenger + Luggage, Off Road Level, Off Road 'Bumpy'.

This is done with the same switch, you just hold it in for a couple of secs and then press to scroll through the various settings as above.

Hope this helps.

Best regards

Yes it's still there, and it's pretty handy. I bimble off road now and then and take the missus out as well. Push of a button and the suspension settings are completely changed. :thumb2

yoe u have ride height: one helmet up to mountain.( little graphics).
then you have soft-norm-hard damping.
even on the soft with the twin cam it is still firm compared to my 05 bike.
i like riding with the heigth on mountain even though i have a moderate case of ducks desease, gives a good lofty riding position, the worry about getting your feet down when stopping goes away with familiarity.
Its a nice gizmo but important.

Thanks for the info. Thinking it was only the three damping adjustments I had written it off as a very expensive toy. Now I'm faced with regular changes between solo, two up and luggage its probably a nice to have feature.
Is it rebuild able? its unlikely Hagon will do a replacement.

Never found this one, solo + pax + luggage, is it me, my bikes (08 and 09GS) or on later models only.

Have all settings on my 2008 GS, but from memory there's a few things to do to get the settings. Don't you have to have the engine running and the side stand down to change the settings? Always catches me out when I need to change the luggage settings........

A lot of criticism of ESA on the forums but I like!

Ability to change damping on the move is great.....especially when you find some sports bikes to annoy......just drop into sport and all firms up nicely.......couldn't ride it on that all day though.....

You can change the damping on the move but the ride heigth you must be stopped engine running in nutral
