Hi all, I have recently bought and recommissioned a 2008 R1200GS and I want to take it across to France later this summer for a bike trip.
I have been quietly looking at getting some European Breakdown cover but it seems it will cost me an arm and a leg.
Something like £140 plus being the cheapest for 14 day trip......
Anyone got any ideas on who I could contact ?
Cheers

I buy "Euro Breakdown". Google it. You'll have to check if there's a vehicle age limit. But a year is a tad over 100.

Used them once when my 1150 big bearing on the FD failed. They did their thing (but note I was carrying a new bearing and seals with me, just in case - they found me a friendly bike garage that gave me access to all their gear and left me alone to do the job)

Highly recommend having a carefully worked out tool roll with you and a 2-3 different styles of punture repair kit with you

Don't sweat the simple stuff. Your first line tells me that if you are capable enough to recommission a 2008 bike then you'll be able enough to easily sort any issues that arise. I ride a twenty-five year old 1150, do all my own work on it and last summer rode it around the Balkans for three weeks without a bother and I'd head off again today without a thought. If you would trust the bike enough to ride from Cornwall to Yorkshire or even Scotland then she's more than good enough to go to France. You know your bike, and your own abilities well enough to know she'll be fine.

Have a good trip. :thumb2

Prepare your bike properly and it will likely get you through. I'm not saying stupid things don't happen, but you are riding a relatively new bike, not a 1960s BSA shitbox.

Make sure you understand the repatriation terms. On some (most?) policies if the bike can’t be repaired locally or quickly (locally = France or wherever you are) and the bike is worth less than repatriation costs they won’t return it to the uk. I think they’ll pay you out and scrap the bike.

I used the RAC but not sure about age, very good service it is silly to say don’t need it ‘sos you do your own maintenance, not much good if you break down in the sticks with no help available when this happens you’ll
Be glad of that phone no!.

Open a Nationwide Flexplus account.
It gives you Worldwide family travel insurance, Uk and Europe breakdown cover and family cover for mobile phones.
The european breakdown covers up to 7.5 tonne mobile homes as well as motorcycles over 200cc.
There is no age limit on vehicles.
It costs £18 per month so £216 per year.
However in the last 12 months I have received £250 in my account from their "fairer share" payment scheme.
There's also no charges for using your card abroad or in a non-sterling currency.
Hope this helps.

Is there a lower limit of funds that have to be in the account Casper? Or cash flow through it ?

We looked at a flex plus account a few months back. I’ll be opening one when my current breakdown policy expires. From memory there is a minimum sum to be paid in - something like £600 and I seem to remember at least 2 maybe 3 DDs for household bills.

I think that was a requirement only when they are offering a bribe to switch to the account. Open it without a switch and all you have to pay in is the £18 fee each month

The other thing mentioned above is the Nwide loyalty bonus. Just having the Flex Plus account is not enough to receive this as you are not a member of the building society as a banking customer. You need to have an eligible savings or mortgage product to qualify.

This is exactly what I have done.

They covered my 1997 Africa Twin. It's a great account with excellent benefits for the cost. Nationwide in general have been good.

I think its £114 for me, for silver cover,

£165 for gold,

either one works for me,

Pay the money ya tight f*cker

Another recommendation for Nationwide Flexiplus.
As others said you get breakdown on all your vehicles including motorbikes, travel and phone insurance.
We have two normal cars, a classic beetle and the GS all covered.. so what's not to like, have a look if it suits you!

Been doing some pricing this morning...

Euro breakdown

based on a 2011 bike,

Single trip

Silver - repatriation = cost of bike £114.99

Gold - Repatriation = Unlimited £165.99

RAC

Comprehensive - Repatriation = cost of bike £91.82
Comprehensive plus - Repatriation = Unlimited £151.36

However , if you already have a UK RAC policy , things get interesting

You can add a European rescue - Repatriation = cost of bike, As a bolt on package to your currently policy for £35.44 and it runs for the length of your UK policy until renewal

They do a single policy if the above isn't suitable , but i cant see it being cheaper than the £35.44

Might be an option for some people

Up to 16 years old, unfortunately

Revisiting this, as it now affects me!

I'm looking for single trip breakdown cover, for my 2006 HP2E and Mrs Berin's 1996 Basic. Ideally, cover to include repatriating the bike in case of driver illness but at this stage I'll take anything.

Closest I've got so far is BikeSure, who insure the HP2 - this is an annual policy only, though, doesn't repatriate the bike in case of illness and the policy only has 6 weeks left to run and is not pro-rated. It's only £62, so would do at a push.

I've got Gem breakdown for the UK, but their partner that provides euro cover that I normally use only does bikes up to 10 years old.

ps. I don't want another bank account!

Can recommend the RAC fell of the 1150 in Italy and broke my collar bone bike left in hotel, car park and couple of weeks later got bike returns home. It arrived on a trailer with several others towed by a van full
of more bikes!, looked like breakdowns were catching!.
