Ever gone past fuel light warning ?

2009 gs, ran it to 0 at 185 miles. The computer said 54 mpg so I figured I was OK for min 200 miles on a tank full. It took 16.4 l to fill it back up.
The gauges are a real waste of time but its so difficult to ignore a flashing warning and a triangle warning sign all lit up.
I think BMW give the fuel gauge, seat, footrests, shafts, gearboxes, fuel controllers and rear bevel boxes to their first year apprentices to look after, they cannot seriously consider them developed despite 20 years of trying, amateurs in sheds do a better job.
Despite this I do like the bike, just wish its development was finished and I felt confident of a trouble free tour.

That's a new winge to me .... What's wrong with 'em?

Run it close a few times but a dealer friend of mine says he has had them run out showing between 30 -0. They tend to recalibrate after every fill and if you don't fill em to the top they are way off the mark. Just do the sums in your head and figure for about 45 mpg and you shouldnt have a problem. Have to agree that the fuel sender/ comp (mist likely the comp) is utter shite.

The footrests are only a niggle, they are much too high for riding long distances. Wonderlich, Touratech and Nippy Norman are making a packet on lowering kits.
The rear lowering kit was £145.00 and the front (GSAfoot pegss) 65.00 s/hand. They have made a massive difference to comfort but could have been fitted by BMW originally.

Ive had a 2010 bike run out of fuel on me with 30 mile range left showing on the dash. Was a test ride but i still bought one.

2010 GSA stopped on the M23 (nice) with 45 miles showing on the computer and blocks left on the fuel guage.

Have run it a lot lower than that before and the previous 50 miles were ridden reasonably easy so shouldn't have mucked up the maths.

Am interested that a previous post says that the sender recalibrates when the tank is fully fueled, I normally only half fill the tank to avoid lugging around all that extra weight (I don't do high miles) - can anyone confirm if they do recalibrate as that could be source of my problem?

Would be a relief if it's something so straightforward because standing on the hard shoulder for an hour and a half waiting for the nice BMW assist man gave me plenty of time to think :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Strangely, the gauge on this one is fairly accurate and I often go down to <10 miles .....

Touring with a mate we both ran to 7 miles remaining then got 16 litres in, so 4 litres left at zero miles. Both GS twin cams. I always fill to the brim so recalibrating not an issue.

Just lately, Ive sailed close to the wind with 4 or 5 miles showing on the fuel gauge several times just before I managed to get to the petrol station.

Has anyone,by accident or design, gone past that figure. ie, nil, or minus miles to go !!!

Does the bike go "slurp" followed by much swearing and a trip to local BM garage. ???

OR are BM being conservative, and will the bikes actually keep going beyond Nil miles ???

How much did you get in? That should answer your question.

Been 18 miles past zero.

Also had her run out with 17 miles left, after a service where the tank was off.

Pushed the fully-laden cow quarter of a mile to a petrol station.
Filled her up, turned on ignition, listened to sounds of pumps and things and fired her up.

Did 299.9 miles without running out in Spain once.

:beerjug:

That's going some! You must have been nursing it :D

Since I've had the KTM I've run out twice, what makes it worse is that it was on consecutive days :augie However on both occasions I was extremely lucky and coasted onto a garage forecourt :D You couldn't make it up!

33 miles!!

Parked my GSA at work on the side stand. Tried to start it to ride home & not a splutter, 33 miles left! Wiggled it about as much as is possible with the friggin great lump to no avail...Borrowed a mates bike, bought a can & filled it up for £12.50, giving me 84 miles (but I don't trust it).

a fortnight ago ,the second the fuel light came on my bike spluterd ,i was next to the esso ,so i filled it up,just come back from fort william on sunday and twice i let it get right past the light ,i got down to two miles left ,so i dont know what went on a fortnight ago . but all seems fine now, when i refilled it ,i gave the tank a shake and it did seem to still have a fair bit still in.if you got a top box,put your self a green can in full of fuel and give it ago,and let us know how far you get:thumb2

Last week I had a R800r on loan whilst my GSA was in for its 600 mile service, the gauge said 55 miles left in the tank when it spluttered to halt from 80mph. I had to push the bloody thing 2 miles up hill to get fuel.
That was light bike:blast
Ive learnt my lesson, when the GSA light comes on I will fill up quick, I ain't pushing that bloody thing!!!

What wasn't funny was the number of bikers that rode past as I pushed.

I set off for work today with a reading of 180miles to go & by the time i arrived i was down to 43miles ??? i only live 16 miles away from work. whats that all about? i might just find out how far i can push it on the way home:confused:

The lowest I had on the comp display was 6 miles beyond the reading '---' and the bike was still running! :thumb2

Coincidence as im the OPoster.

Bike ran out of fuel today with 26 miles showing.
Wierd as i get it down to 6 or 7 miles usually, with no problems.
That'l teach me !

My 1200 shat out in the fast lane showing 49 miles the Monday I went to work after picking it up. I did a test with a fuel can in the panniers a few weeks ago and it died showing 79. I always use the trip now and fill at 200. I don't mind the wanky gauge, I do mind not having a physical reserve.

Mines run dry on me twice in the last few months. First time was right opposite a petrol station, the second time I was out in the sticks and had to phone a friend. Reported range of 18 and 28 miles

Then again I was sure I was about to run dry on a recent trip abroad and made it to the pumps with a little left in the tank.

I'll be filling it to the brim and using the trip meter a lot more from now on :eek

Mines become unreliable. Used to 'hide' at least 10 miles but died with 9 on the guage a couple of weeks ago.
