EWS

Had same EWS problem here in Aussie ... GS has been at dealer for 5 weeks waiting for new antenna ring ... just wondering if anyone has had a repeat failure with the antenna ring ... would hate it to fail out in the boonies somewhere.

i had ews failure back in june 2006, was told a faulty batch of antenna rings had been fitted. sounds like that same faulty batch is being used a year on, i think not!!!

Hi Sadjim. No Pm as yet. can you give it another go?

SadJim, any chance i could join the PM club please. I have a spare ant ring along with my fuel pump relay dodar, did'nt no it needed some magic i thought you only needed to fit it. Would maybe come in handy on my trip later this month.
Many thanks. Lyn.

any chance they could sort out the endless engine and gearbox oil seal failures, mystery battery discharges, bollocksed fuel pump energiser, self destructing final drive and leaky panniers while they're at it? :augie

especially the leaky panniers in my case :D

Not to mention chocolate valves too:augie

My fuel pump controller failed in Austria earlier this year. We rode down through torrential rain a coule of days earlier, and the bike was parked outside overnight in similar weather conditins.

Strangely, while the fuel pump controller was playing up (it took a couple of days to go from intermittent failure to total failure), I did once get the EWS warning message on the instrument display. Turned ignition off and on again - see, I could work in IT! - and the warning went away and hasn't returned. Fingers crossed...

Whether there's a connection between the rain, the fuel pump controller and the EWS is anyone's guess. I imagine BMW aren't going to admit to anything.

i do work in IT :) and if this set of circumstances had happened to me with a computer (althought quite what I would be doing riding a pc in torrential rain i don't know), i would have 100% diagnosed it as the water doing the damage.

i think the water gets in the key barrel, or somewhere else it shouldn't, creates an electrical short in there somewhere and that frys the antenna ring unit. a dob of silicon sealer somewhere inside it would probably suffice.. doesn't account for all the failures but..

i really must buy the maintenance DVD - has it been updated to include the 07 models yet?

in my work, i don't tolerate the "restart the computer and problem will go away" line of reasoning / fault solution.... i didn't expect it to be happening to the bike.

happened today too, with the Tyre Pressure Control doodah. front tyre is reading 2.0, dips briefly to 1.9 and then I got the yellow triangle, and a cute little icon resembling a flat tyre. switch off, switch on (whilst waiting at lights, I was v worried about doing it) and the warning went away - i knew the tyre was fine, albeit needing a top-up of air.

does anyone happen to know what microprocessor the ECU uses? i wonder how long it will be before we can buy chips.........

You could spray the BMW Assist card, it wont stop you breaking down but the card will slide out of your wallet much easier:D

Oy! That's the sort of comment that I get slagged off for making.:augie

Anyway, why don't you all take spare bike with you? Then as bits go wrong you have a spare handy.:augie:hide

EWS

Was out on mine (07, 1200GS) today and filled up with petrol, came back to the bike and it wouldn't start. Had the manual with me so read it and then phoned BMW rescue. After waiting about 1/2 an hour tried the bike again and it started so cancelled the rescue call and rode the bike home. Stopped the engine and then tried to restart - no go ! Tried the spare key, still no go. Will have to phone BMW in the week and get them to come and collect the bike. To note, it wasn't wet, the bike hadn't been washed, lives in agarage and this was after about 100 miles. The bike has only 1300 miles on so I am a big bit pissed off.

Wouldn't mind knowing how to do the fix thing if anyone wants to PM me ?

Seamus

To note, Took the bike to Williams Manchester this am. Lee the Mechanic had it sorted, repaired and back on the road within 2 hours. Thanks Lee.

07 model / no rain for a while ... ews warning / straight on to bmw , yes sir will have someone out to you soon (4 hours later) was picked up and taken over to battersea ..... ' oh dont worry sir , we have spare units in stock will have it fixed quickly' ... many thanks thats nice to know ...... ' oh and while its here we are putting new seals in the gearbox as we notice some seepage'

just over 4600 miles , ruined a weekend .... makes you wonder why pay so much money for one of these things ... fun to ride though

Any chance of including me in the PM. Have had 2 fuel pump relay failures, and will carry a spare in future. Any other preventive spares would be a great idea. off to spain in 2 weeks. Many thanks
