EWS RECALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just spoke to my local dealer and was told that the problem with the EWS was infact just being dealt with as a 'campaign' as opposed to a 'recall':eek

Therefore the dealers were not required and therefore wouldn't contact the owners of affected bikes.

I managed to get mine in for a EWS change in less than 24hrs, so all credit to my dealer.

However the overall policy sucks:mad: - IMHO all owners should of been contacted.

Just my 2p worth!

AFAIK for the 1200GS

chassis numbers ZS91949 to ZS99999
ZU58500 to ZU74499

which I think is 07 and 08 bikes or anything built after Sept 2006(when the 07 bikes where being produced)

Stumpy

My 07 is within these ranges and has been in for 6000 service since the dates this information was available.

Want to guess which Essex based dealer did not bother to do this work nor tell me it was due. Clue - They may have featured prominantly on this forum of late....

I'm with the same dealer and am definately on the list because I asked when I was over there about a month ago. I was told that they are awaiting a special tool from BMW and will then write to all customers on the list.

I think I just saw a pig fly by.

R1200GS March 2008 - 3838miles.

Was out checking out motorcycle parking spaces in Windsor prior to a visit next week. Pulled into a car park, found the bike bays logged the position in the GPS and then turned the ignition off whilst I changed the file name. Turned the bike back on and got the EWS! message :thedummy:thedummy:thedummy

Called BuMW assist and 90mins later SOS recovery turned up and took me home.

Bike is now parked up in my parents garage until I can phone BuMW assist in the morning and arrange to get it into SLM.

What's the position on BuMW providing replacement vehicles whilst original has broken down?

Thanks

Nigel

Well... I phoned BMW assist on Monday morning and after listening to 20mins of Vivaldi got through to someone and they arranged to pick the bike up and get it into SLM. Bike was at dealer around 1200 and was out being roadtested when I called the dealer at 1430.

They could not drop it back to me so I collected after work this afternoon. All sorted :thumb2

As i mentioned previously, this Essex based dealer is calling it a campaign and not a recall - so just give them a call and they'll sort it

I had my EWS thingy changed this morning - they mentioned they have a special tool, but it doesn't work very well, so apparently they have to do a bit of drilling to remove the security bolts.

Job took less than 2 hrs, and to be fair the team at this garage was very friendly:thumb2

My '08 is in having it's fractured brake pipe repaired and they also mentioned unprompted that the ring antenna has been replaced at the same time.

So those people that dont spend time on here will never know they are riding with a potential problem.

EWS

After reading thread on this fantastic forum, hopped on bike and screamed down to BMW dealer. They asked whether i had received the 'recall' letter? To which i replied 'er... no...' :nenau. Anyhow, seems BMW Geneva has over 150 recalls to do and they are sending out 10 a week as they obviously cant do them all at once. They were well helpful though and once i explained I'm planning a ride in 3 weeks they booked me in for next week. :beerjug:

As a 'newbie' to the forum, must admit its superb!! Things like this certianly make the world a better place! :hug (and of course i can ride feeling far more safe in the knowledge that bike should start every morning!!) :aidan

Same as you Tim, my March 07 GSA was within the VIN range, no contact whatsover from my dealer. Given that I'm about to embark on a week touring in bonnie Scotishland, I gave then a call. Booked me in within the week and got it sorted today. I asked whether there was also a Fuel Pump controller reacal/campaign and they sheepishly said NO, but there probably will be. Out of interest, (and I haven't read all 12 pages of this thread so sorry if I'm duplicating) The new Ring Antenna can easily be identified by the word "ignition" embossed on the raised plastic circle around the key entry.

Fingers crossed for no FPC on my Scotland jaunt

Not good is it on a bike that cost me £12K, I 'm feeling like I had more faith in my 996..........:(

Like my stepfather, who's on his way to Portsmouth for a ferry,he'd stopped for fuel and is awaiting BMW assist or whoever they send these days:blast
His ferry leaves at Ten:rolleyes: fingers crossed............

Just moved to France from Spain , Spoke to Spanish dealer prior to moving and was told he had no information re EWS antenna problems.
Having moved here contacted BWW Uk about the terms of the Spanish warranty , was it Europe wide etc ? and asked about the antenna quoting my VIn Number

just recieved this reply .

Thank you for your reply.

Your R1200GS Adventure has an outstanding recall for the replacement of the ring aerial which is part of the EWS system. Please contact your local Motorrad Dealership who will be able to arrange for the work to be carried at your convenience. There is no need to wait until your next service is due as failure of this component can happen at anytime.

I hope you are settling well in France.
Yours sincerely

BMW Group UK

so off to Limoges on Monday to practice my French

EWS Changed on 07 & 08 bikes

I've got an 07 & 08 GSA - Both have had EWS changed - as a recall,
BMW have got zillions of em to do, so recon they're just trying to work through them all whilst servicing.
Obviously dealers are not wetting themselves to get em done - cus it's not a pleasant job to drill out the barrel - & they don't earn as much on recall work!

EWS No.2 goes AWOL

Tried atemp repair with new EWS to get me home as Mechs had gone home, but, alas, the new one stll came up with EWS failure :( So NOG have me bike and bro had to give me a lift home (no courtesy bikes available :( )

THEY HAD THREE BIKES IN THE CAR PARK LABELLED COURTESY BIKE!!!

Would have given you a lift if only your bro was willing to take 200 :D :augie

Obviously, I am not in favour with NOG then :o:confused::(

Offer of lift was much appreciated Tom, but you still need to offer more than 200 ;):augie Ebay action is imminent after HELI FIX at chilton.:bounce1

new EWS don`t work ?

Just like to clarify what happened at NOG ref the new EWS. Simon (Parts Guy) and I attempted to temporarily fit the new one to get me home. We disconnected the old EWS and connect the new one with the intention of securing the new one with zip ties alongside the old one. Apparently this should work, but when the ignition was switched on, after the system going through its checks, the EWS warning flashed up with no reaction when pressing the starter button.

So the conclusion I have is that either we didn`t do something right or the new one was faulty. Simon did say that they had replaced many of the old EWS modules and hadn`t heard of any problems with the new one. My bike will be looked at on monday and hopefully back on the road soon.

I think it's because the bike is too clean :D
