Can anyone think of reasons not to buy an Ex Police R1200RT ?

Bike has full BMW service history and is in very good condition.
38k last service @36k

As an ex-police motorcyclist, I'd ONLY buy one I knew the history of - pool bikes used to get badly treated. The mileage is suspect - Avon & Somerset used to sell their county bikes at 100k and their city bikes at 80k. The BMW odometer would be on zero when sold, as the mileage was recorded on a calibrated speedo/odo which was removed prior to sale. All this info is very old, but be sure you know what you're buying...

To be fair, some are excellent, & have been looked after by a conscientious rider..............& some are not.
Judge it like you would any other used machine.
What Force, as a matter of interest.

As a Police motorcyclist ... my thoughts ... :P

It's a lottery! There are some motorcyclists out there, whose job bike is their pride and joy and they look after it meticulously. Many bikes are issued to riders and nobody else will ride them. (This is my case - we all have 'our own' bike and the only reason that a colleague would take mine is if his was in for a service or the like).
But there are plenty of riders who don't particularly look after their bike - I know of one (super guy, bloody nice bloke ..!) who goes through clutches like they're made of butter. He's on his third I think and the bike has about 40K on it.

Other things to think about, are what the bike has done in its life? My bike works feckin' hard! The sort of work I do comprises of a lot of 'go get that anpr hit'. So often my bike is stationary for quite a while then pretty much redlining every gear to hunt down something thats a mile or two ahead of me :nenau Rest .... sprint, rest .. sprint etc etc. Last week I dispatched an urgent socco run on blue lights from deep in the south east to Oxford. That's throttle pinned all the way. So it's fair to say they don't get an easy life.

On the positive side, nothing on a job bike or car is repaired - if it's worn or fecked it gets replaced with new. (I am on my second motor having blown up the first one at 130mph on the M20!).

So, definitely a lottery. If I look at our fleet then yes, there would be one or two bikes that if they came up for auction, I know they'd be a really good buy. But there are plenty that I'd think, feck me, some poor bugger's going to buy that one ... !

If you knew the bikes history and what it had been used for (driving school? Patrol work? DPG bimble from embassy to Embassy ... ) then that would certainly help ...

Bike has come down from Scotland, still has a calibrated speedo fitted. Already has rear seat etc. Service book is all BM stamped. Wheels show no sign of corrosion, callipers are looking nice too. But it is fairly low spec. That said, it does have heated grips and an Odesy battery.

The low spec ....

Peepes think that we get the best :eek We more often get the bog standard or worst !!!!

My RT is a generic factory Police bike. It has no ESA and the front end is like a blinking off roader :eek It's so soft that I can pull a car over and 'flash' them just by bouncing the front by chopping my throttle a few times. Your high street civvie RT is a far superior bike ....

Ahhh Scottish you say ??

Well they all ride like a bunch of girls up there so it won't have been thrashed .... :D

Bike is an 07 reg and the price is £5500, oh did I mention it's White!

Smudger would be a good bloke to chat to about this as he bought an ex Plod RT 1200 and converted it to civilian spec. I'm pretty sure he posted a thread about it on here :thumby:

IIRC underneath all the road crap was a pretty clean bike :D

Just a point.... Leicestershire's FJR fleet are around 2008 vintage, and most between 20 and 30k on the clocks...so mileage perfectly feasible :thumb2

The odd one or two have been Green Lane'd and even dropped .....

BMW RT

FWIW regarding the price I found an 07 plate on ebay at a Triumph dealers up in York for my old boy and he collected it yesterday. 1200 SE with panniers top box etc 17.5k full BMW history for just shy of £5900? I popped in and helped him unload it yesterday and its mint he's chuffed to bits.

Thats a lot for an ex plod bike, bike will have come from an auction, so some one is selling on for a profit, have a look round, Just before Christmas is best time to buy a bike, meet the seller, how long has he had the bike, how long has it been up for sale, make an offer he can only say no.
Or buy the bike above for £2500, then if its a bad one you wont lose much when you sell to Motor Works for breaking

I'd rather find a bike like that, than take a punt on an ex job one ... :thumb

Ops Q Plate posted when I was sending in a post, so you could do worse than doing a search on the Dealers, see what they have to offer

Far too dear for ex police .... I'd sell you my 2009 SE for not much more !!
There are plenty out there .... you just have to find them !!

For that year and colour it's £1K too much. Mine came from Scotland with calibrated speedo and a detailed service history - £4.5K and 21000miles two years ago. There is a regular seller near York on eBay trading as JRS Motors - would be happy to deal with him again

If you intend keeping it as a solo bike you can cut an opening in the ss ground plate to create a large storage area for tools etc. it is also easy to remove a lot of the Authority wiring, connectors and other equipment to lighten and simplify the machine

Go for it
