Sent my 1200 GS into Rainbow for a well deserved Service after my USA Odyssey and they say the Pinion Bearings have gone and this means a new final drive unit.
BMW warranty folk say this is not covered and no claim can be made. I have the policy booklet in front of me and it says it is but they can`t talk to me about it as there is no claim number. No claim number because they won`t recognize there is a claim!!!! Agggghhhhh :mcgun
They wonder why people get pissed off?

Rainbow are approaching BMW to see if they can get a good will claim. Seems like a waste of time getting the extended warranty chaps if your dealer still has to go cap in hand to BMW for help.

Caveat Emptor
:(

On a brighter note I get My HP2 back from Adventure Bike Warehouse tmrw with a new shiny offensively loud can on it ( and a load of shit stickers they have put on):thumb2

Small claims court? Sounds like a con to me if they simply wont honour a contract because you don't have a number they wont give you.

Getting woody looking at that:comfort

Sounds like one for the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Straight lift from their list of items covered

"Final drive
All internally lubricated components, including but not limited to the following:
Failure of the following parts: crown wheel, pinion and bearings. Pinion shaft oil seal and crown wheel cover seal, rear wheel carrie
r."

Why can't/wont rainbow make a claim?

Hope you get this sorted quickly SG.

Sounds like a recorded delivery letter direct to both Rainbow and Mondial (assuming that it's a BMW branded warranty) stating the current position. You're only sending to the dealers to confirm the current position. Offer 7 days for Mondial/BMW to reply then it's on to the Ombudsman.

The part is clearly covered in the warranty description - someone has dropped the ball here and a quick scare should sort them out.

Sounds like a cock-up, there have been plenty of final drives fixed under warranty, are they protesting about how you've used the bike or something?

I agree ..... it sounds like a simple breakdown in communication between your dealer and Mondial unless it's a service related issue i.e. you've gone well overdue a scheduled service or you've had it serviced outside of the dealer network?

Why can't/wont Rainbow make a claim?

They are:blast

Sounds like Rainbow have their history muddled!I thought the dealer could OK the repair if it was covered, and it is,so have they told them the right thing?

No dealer can proceed without prior authorisation from BMW, even on sub 2yo bikes.........................them's the rules nowadays

No authorisation from BMW...................dealer has to pay, so they proceed with caution - diagnose fault and send a report to BMW with pics, to await their decision on whether it's warranty/goodwill or down to the customer to pay

Pinion bearings may be deemed 'wear and tear', on an insurance backed warranty................whether the FD has been affected isn't cut and dried, it's up to BMW on how much (if any) they will pay...........at the end of the day, it's all down to BMW's viewpoint - warranty or no warranty - who do you think backs the warranty:nenau

I'm sure Rainbow are doing all they can to help

Had my final drive unit changed when the bike was out of warranty and my dealers negotiated a 'goodwill' replacement. I did have to pay labour costs, but that was only about £50. Keep at them until they sort it out.:thumb2

and they say the Pinion Bearings have gone and this means a new final drive unit.

Rainbow along with most other dealers are probably getting 2 to 3 Final drives a week that have gone down.

Roly Biker was in Rainbow last week, he had a bearing changed. He is taking part in The Iron Butt Rally. At Cracoe Village Hall last Sunday, he bought a what looked like a new unit, but was a second hand unit (a scratch on it, replaced under insurance damage) for £150. That will be his spare which he can have posted from home to anywhere in Europe.

When his Final drive packs in I will then have his knackered one to strip down and repair.:augie:augie

Yes, you noisey buggar, could hear the gear changes 1/4 mile away and I was indoors. :wasntme

See you at Adventure Warehouse tomorrow, they have some very good equipment and gear in.:)

Just got a call from Rainbow and BMW have agreed to Goodwill the whole job, which is nice!:thumb2

That's good news, get it done, then give them shite about not covering it on the extended warrantee, then again perhaps they read about your FD exploits in the USA:nenau

Good for you

Nice one Gaz
thats exactly what we pay the extended warranty for
mind you the wording pretty much hung BMW :clap

Didn`t ask on the phone but will be asking them tmrw when I collect it.
