Extra Lights fitted today

Cheers Mouse.

I 'll have a go at it now that I have read Stephens notes again. The only thing I don't know to do for certainty is finding that wire that goes into the headlight main beam. Also what does he men by a figure 8 cable? Perhaps out of courtesy I should have asked him and not you. Sop Stephen if you pick this thread up please post a reply.

Thanks Alan, for the mention of the Grille.
I have just got an 1150 now and will be requiring your services in the very near future.

Firgure 8 cable is just twin core. I used twin core main cable on my bike, to tap into the headlight circuit. I cut into the existing wires where they enter the headlamp unit, and soldered one core of my cable to the dip beam wire and one to the main beam wire. I ran this twin core cable to the tooltray under the seat which is there I mounted the relays. Twin core mains cable is good for this purpose IMO because it's doubly insulated.

You only need to run one wire for each circuit because all the wiring shares a common ground. I'm not sure why stephenm states that you need to insulate your lamps from the bike's frame, beacuse as long as you wire them the correct way round, the lamps' ground will be connected to the bike's frame which in turn is connected to the -ve terminal of the battery.

In fact I have added a horn to my bike by wiring the +ve terminal of the horn to the +ve side of the original horn. and the other terminal of the new horn is just connected to the engine casing.

See this thread in the 1200 section for a few more details:

By the way, I agree with BTBR when he says "despite what other people have done, be careful". It's your bike, be sure of what you are doing before you fiddle with it!

Thanks Mouse. Excellent diagram and notes. That makes it so much easiet.

Oh! almost forgot. I take it that if I am only wiring up driving lights I don't need twin core cable????????

True, but while you've got the tank off etc to route the cable, it might be as well to wire both. It would save time and effort later if in the future you decide to add another set of lights switched on the other circuit.

Just make sure the unused end of the second wire is well insulated so it can't short to anything.

Good man. You were obviously at the front of the queue when the big man handed out brains.

I hadn't thought of that (whilst the the tank was off) I mean. You do realise I will now be searching for a set of fog lamps. Still I can always blame you when the "boss" says "what more toys". :beerjug:
