F800GS-ABS & computer essentials?

Computer is not essential and ABS is a good extra but again, not crucial. Condition/price are the main factors in my opinion. What I found was needed most with my 2013 model were a Mudsling and front fender extender to keep the crap off it and Hyperpro fork springs to minimise the fork dive on braking.

The computer is nothing special and not worth paying extra for

Plus 1 for this quote, yep temp gauge and fuel consuption are nice to have but not essential. ABS wise its up to you, its certainly one less thing to go wrong, and the little sensors are aesy to damage when whipping out your wheels at tyre change time.

As mentioned above, overall condition service history plus any extras top box crash bars ect , lastly whether you really like it.

My F8GS has ABS and the OBC, however that's only cos they had one in stock when I bought it. I did ask if I could have it without but was told ABS is now across the range.

Given my "issues" over the years with my K12GT I wanted as little "tech" as poss. The sales guy seemed quite amazed when I said no to the ESA and no to the ASC.

Talking of ESA on the F8GS, it seems to be a bit useless as it only provides for altering the damping not the preload as I understand it?

I bought my F800GSA new and specced it only to have ABS. I didn't want all the worries I used to have with the electronics on my R1200GS.

Bought new fairly recently, got all gadgets, do I use them, no. That's not to say I didn't want them. If it all stops working, Warranty card out.

Thanks for all the feedback. I bought the one without ABS or computer just down to condition and it was twelve months younger than the other one and it was preferred colour grey ! Just listing the essentials of crash bars and maybe comfort seat for my old bones and a few other bits that I usually buy. Does anyone know if Ali panniers off 1200gs will fit the 800gs with 800 Ali frames if you get me or are they plain too big ?
Looking forward to getting it next week and getting back on the road before the weather get too miserable.

ABS is a given on modern bikes. Mine has it. A great system, and no issues. Might just save your life one day.

The computer is useful. Although, I mainly flick from temp to dte (distance to empty), and occasionally the average fuel consumption.

Everyone has their own opinion on how important these things are to them. However, it's worth considering that a bike with ABS and a computer will probably be worth more when you come to sell it. At the very least, it'll sell quicker. Any vehicle where the owner has splashed out for all the bells and whistles is more likely to have been cherished and looked after.

Well mine has the computer and ABS, but only because it was the one I liked as a bike.
I only ever look at extras after I have ridden something to see if I like it to ride. Extra electronic stuff is just something else to go wrong, where boxes, panniers et cetera have a useful value; and tend not to stop working when you haven't used them for 7 or 8 months.
Of 3 GS's since 2001; 2 x R1150, 1 x F800; only two have had ABS, and then only because that's how they came.
The essentials are not computer based but are: is it good to ride, does it make you want to go for a ride when you go in your garage to do something not bike related, do you find yourself finding reasons to take the bike not the car?
If it doesn't do any of that then it doesn't matter what it is or the reasons you bought it - it's the wrong bike for you.
Plus telling some-one that they should have one with all the computer stuff, V8, when they have already said that they have bought one without it, isn't very helpful...
I say just get out there and enjoy the bike - don't listen to any of us, it's your bike, you have it the way you want it.
Have fun on the road and watch out for all the numpties
