Ooops, forgot to say that it needs to be extremely reliable and easy to fix at the side of the road.:augie

We're all doomed

Oh sorry he's Scottish:augie

Would the 800 make a suitable second bike to an ADV? I mean is it good enough off road, to fit it up with knobblies and just use it for the odd greenlaning/off road excursion?

Shep

Shep, frankly, I think with that route you would still only have 2/3's of an off roader. The 800's like the 12's are designed for off road capability (when considering that an RT is not), they are not off road bikes as such.

I feel a better solution and way more fun (isn't fun we are after..) would be to look at a KLX 250/450 or a DR 400, or if its' BMW you want look at the new 450.... then there is also the orange stuff.. All are serious off road bikes with little lights, sub frames won't brake and suspention won't fold on you.

And they are a whole lot cheaper. Just be careful that with one of these little animals you don't wheelie yourself "inta cut" rather than on it..

ps. with a plank you can also 'store ont barge"

The bikes you suggest are, of course, a whole better for off-roading.... However, in the UK, many of us need to include 50 plus miles of road riding to get to the off-roading. It is possible to ride those distances on off-road bikes, but most of us want a bike that will make that part of the ride enjoyable as well. The 800 may well be very well suited to this. I enjoy my HP2 for just that reason.

Mav I get your point, but the bikes I have suggested are trail bikes not works MX bikes.

I think we are all getting a little soft, at 17 my first bike was a TS 90, Susuki Trail bike, I toured all over the UK on it. In the 80's I did 4500km in six weeks on a KX 125 trail bike around Sumatra, Indonesia.

I agree that the 50 miles or so getting to the dirt would be better on the 800 or 12, but hey the fun when you get there will be worth it.

anyway onlt my 2 bobs worth.

It's all about the trade off - some us will get a better dirt bike and survive the road ride and some will go the other way. There are some that think the HP2 is far too focused to be used on the road.. but I love it. So I can def see your perspective. Only I haven't been riding long enough to have ever hard it so hard touring on a 90!! And now that I have tasted the sauce... I can't go without!!

Guess I'm lucky Mav, I love bikes, all bikes. So for me I'd rather ride something than nothing at all. I've lived in some strange places (and with little money at times) so had to take what was going. In sumatra another time I only had a Honda C 90.... did 3000km is 8 weeks, and loved it. Believe me you see a lot traveling at 40km/h. Frankly cant go much faster anyway on the roads there.

Of course going backwards from an HP2 would not be easy, and also lucky for me I have not had to go backwards, and now own exactly what I want. I can't touch the ground on an HP2, but also comute 400km each monday and friday, so the GS is better suited.

I know the area wher Shep lives so still think the smaller bikes would be OK. Being able to own a GSA and and HP2 would be nice, but also a waste as both would get much less use.
