hi all went to start my gsa 06 plate this morning bloody thing refused.
had a fiddle now spotted that neutral light is on when in first so have to start her with the stand up and the clutch in, also when in first gear second gear is shown in display window is this the potentiometer unit playing up.
i plan to clean the connections put in neutral disconnect battery reconnect battery and see if the bloody thing resets.

is this the start of a big problem or typical of the potentiometer unit playing up ??
thanks for your advice

Has the bike been stood for a while, without use?

My 04 does this until the oil is proper warmed up 30+ miles after standing for a while.

:rob

Clean the connector. Remove the gear indicator from the back of the gear box. Dry it out on a radiator. Then fill it with wd40. Then refit it. Mine has been fine since I did this.

Can this be done with the swing arm left on??

Drill a small hole in the bottom of the case so water can drain out and give it a dose of WD40 every now-n-then.

I would like to see how to do it too ! could not find anything on tube.....it looks like a big job to me :tears

during the winter i had it all the time since we have a bit warmer and dryer conditions it got much better again .....but the next winter will come and i really should do the job

its a fiddle but you don't need the swing arm off, if you have the right ring spanner you can loosen the 2 torx bolts and just about undo them with slim fingers

getting it back on can be a fiddle too as you must line up the internal rotating bit with the keyway on the shaft sticking out of the gbox, patience is a virtue

the wires into the bike loom plug are exposed and benefit from some sealing off and in my opinion the biggest gain is to fit a hugger or mudsling, my back end is much cleaner (ooh err) both on the back of the gbox and the rear shock since

I also found that the new sensor cost the same from BMW as the usual indie parts suppliers, if so still it might be easier to get them to do the whole job for the cost of an hours labour (if that's reasonable!)?

Had a new potentiometer fitted to my 05 bike one month ago, after recurring problems. Ten days later and one week into a Spanish trip, I lost neutral and first gear indication. The bike is now awaiting a return visit to the dealer for further diagnosis. I could have a go at fixing it myself but cannot find anyone who has an E8 torx spanner. Thanks to all the contributors to this thread.

Useful thread.

Mine did this twice last night with the indicator eventually correctling itself. Having only had the bike a month I have no idea where all the above mentioned bits are located. Bike is due a service shortly so as it looks like not much labour is involved I'll leave it to the mechanic.

Mine did all of the above for a while, had replacement gear selector switch etc etc but the bike never felt quite right, cut long story short in the end it was the ECU once replaced bike was like new :thumb2

I haven' t had trouble with starting my '04GS but it occasionally does this thing with the gear indicator: the first time it did it I accidentally cured it by riding over the rather bumpy level-crossing at Llandovery; everything went back to proper operation! A bit like when you kick the fridge to stop it vibrating I suppose.

And, of course, you should ALWAYS pull the clutch in whenever you start anything: it takes the drag-load off the starter motor and it's safer. Triumph Tiger 800, Beemer series 5 cars, to name just two, are wired so they won't start unless the clutch is pulled in.

update to earlier post

The problem with the new potentiometer has been diagnosed ; it is faulty. No mention of the ECU by my dealer,so I will see how the bike runs with potentiometer No. 3.
