Right folks,
Sold my GS last year and I'm now considering buying a older 1100 RT.
I have a limited budget at the moment so I'm looking at bikes from 1997 to 1999/ 2000.
Is their anything I should be aware of or look out for.
Your help and advice greatly appreciated. :thumb2

Get a 97-2000 bike for the M97 gearbox... Also I think the later ones were far less to lumpy running with their twin throttle cables and possibly slightly more developed FI...

If it set up well and in pretty good nick then its an easy bike to live with... They all had ABS which is the ABS II and so pre servo... The suspension is a bit softer than the 1150's and initially the gearing feels a bit short in top but you soon get used to it... One of the best 11/1150 RT's that I had a goon was a 99 Tundra Green bike that rode and looked spot on... Obviously try to get one with working grips and ABS and panniers and top box... By now looking at the general condition of the bike and what is behind the odd panel corrosion wise and also checking the owner out for knowledge and care will be as important as FSH etc...

Sorry to hijack the thread but is there a way of visually identifying the later gearbox so that you tell >97MY bikes from late registered early models?

If you are liiking for an RT, think touring.

Most BMWs are geared to rev the nuts of themselves in top, with one exception.
I believe the early 1150 RTs had a decent 6 speed gearbox in them with a top gear that really knocked the revs off when engaged, but BMW in their wisdom dropped it in favour of the standard scream your head off gearbox.
Worth looking for.
Myke
