If anyone needs their large FD bearing doing, my advice is Do It Yourself!
I really couldn't believe how easy it is, I just followed the guides on here and ADVrider. You don't need any special tools other than a 7mm Allen key, although I believe a Torx 45 (?) can be used at a push. To get the bearing moving I used a 'fork' type ball joint splitter, gently tapping either side to lift it evenly until I could get a pair of tyre levers under it. I then pressed down evenly on the levers and the bearing came straight off. I put the new bearing in the oven for about 15 mins at 150C and it literally dropped straight on to the shaft.
I found a lot of metal shavings on the drain magnet so I cleaned out the casing as best I could then poked a small magnetic screwdriver into all the nooks and crannies to get out any remaining metallic debris.
I did this in my garage but am now fully confident I could do this by the side of the road if I had to.
So, if it needs doing, save yourself some money and have the satisfaction of doing the job yourself. It really is that easy :thumb2

Good of you to take the time to post this. Its helpful to get feedback from people who have done repairs themselves.
 
It's pretty straightforward as long as you don't have to reshim. You 'assume' you don't have to as long as you change it before it self destructs:) And changing besides the side of the road doesn't seem so bad - as long as you remembered to carry enough diff oil to refill:)
 
I measured the old and new bearing thicknesses with a micrometer and they were identical (as I expected). I think Steptoe said once that you can drain enough oil from the gearbox to tide you over to the next garage if you have to.

I had to do it last year on the road, although I did find a nice garage to take it apart courtesy of the hotel :D would have been better to have followed steptoes advise and check it before leaving home :P

I assume your 1150 has the oven in the top box ? I didn't tick that option on my adventure. Now I wish that I had. :augie

read Steptoes "how to" your GS comes equipped with the perfect "field expedient bearing heater" built in ! :P
 
Camping stove does the job. When the bearing turns blue it's too hot. ;)
