FD drainplug new position!

By the way, the capacity of the FD is 250ml.

250ml is true for new but they say on a refill it is 230ml - I guess that 20ml doesn't drain - that stuff is pretty sticky.

F/D

Came back from ride today, dropped engine, oil dropped gear box oil, dropped final drive oil (couldn't vac oil out of final drive) so took torque arm and swivelled F/D down. All oils were the same colour i.e. black. Semi synthetic engine oil, semi synthetic gear box oil but what oil do I use in final drive.

I just got my bike back having had a new FD as a goodwill gesture from BMW/SPC as my bike was out of warranty. SPC did all the leg work in arranging this, hats off to them and to BMW for good customer service. Thats why its worth spending a bit more on a quality brand:thumb :bow

Oil

Phoned Castrol Technical about oil in FD. Its rated as fully synthetic and will do 100,000 miles providing no contamination. Asked how it could be contaminated obviously wear and tear would lead to metal/oil contamination and water contamination i.e. hot FD riding into a ford will lead to water being sucked in (oop's) There is a difference between gear box oil and differential oil he recommended using Castrol Syntex Oil 75/90. For the amount of oil and the time it takes to change I intend to change the oil at 6000 mile intervals.

Excellent thread above :thumb

would it be worth flushing the FD with some wd40 etc once the oil has been emptied, fitting the FD back onto splines re fit wheel loosely and turn by hand, then re empty the thin oil from the FD???
Not sure about WD40, but maybe a decent flushing oil will do the job. When i changed mine, i did it after riding, so the FD was warm, and i left it to drain for an hour or so, frequently turning the hub to get as much oil out as possible.

There doesn't appear to be a breather fitted to the bevel box (final drive) on the R1200GS.

Perhaps the pressure within the bevel box is blowing the seals rather than debris, contamination, etc???

Perhaps drilling a hole and fitting a one way valve - say by taping the hole and fitting a bolt with a breather (like the breather bolt on the top of my old R80RT bevel box) would solve it?

I suspect this may have been the case when I changed the oil in my FD as I may possibly have overfilled it slightly, leading to expansion when hot and oil seeping past the shaft seal. I had the FD removed in my garage ready for the dealers to do a seal replacement (save money on labour costs) however as BMW couldn't supply the dealership with a tool to undo the locknut they offered a replacement of the FD instead as a goodwill gesture. On rebuilding and refilling the FD unit, I rode the bike for about a week before giving it to the dealer and the leak had mysteriously cured itself ? I can only guess that I may have added too much oil first time around.

I'm glad I have a new FD unit anyway so I can have peace of mind that it shouldn't leak again, and the paint was beginning to bubble slightly underneath it anyway. No doubt someone will be along shortly to slag off the 1200 and say its bound to leak again soon.

It may be worth noting that the new final drive drain plug is magnetic. My dealer read me a new memo he had just received calling for an fd oil change at the 600 mile service siting impurities in the manufacturing process that can not be removed. Just had my first service and looked at the gunk on the drain plug and there was a small amount of fine blackish stuff. They used a synthetic oil in both the tranny and final drive.

Drain Plug

Any idea when the change will take place saw a new R1200GS just del to dealer today NO NEW drain plug.

Mitch

Hmmm... A magnetic drain plug was one of my first thoughts to getting some of the crud out.

Will have to see if one of the aftermarket guys produce anything.

As far as I know the magnetic drain plug is standard for 2007. I have seen 2 dealers with 06 GS12-s still on the showroom floor. The new ABS is also available for 2007, non-servo, better or worse I don't know yet. But that's another thread.

I believe that what is changing for 2007 is not anything physical about the FD (in other words no new drain or plug) but instead merely the 600 mile service interval. In other words, the FD oil gets changed at 600 miles and nothing else changed.

New drain plug is definitely at the bottom for new models.

Gavin,

Thanks for that info. Someone in the US stated that it was in the same place as before...guess he looked at an '06.

I haven't seen an '07 as yet/mine arrives in about 4 weeks. :thumb

Asked the dealer today about this drain plug in the F/D and they know nothing about it? Still claim that it is sealed for life? Be that 1 day or10 years (1 mile or 100,000miles) who knows. Me I think it is just to get the bike through the warranty period?

I have also heard that there is no new drain plug at the bottom on the 07, per the dealer. Also, the FD oil change, in the US, is only at 600 miles, and then it is supposed to be for life.

Anyone have proof that there is a new plug on the bottom of an 07? Pictures?

Jim
