fd oil

What interval does BMW recommend for changing the FD oil? I now have 6k plus miles on my 2013 camhead and am thinking about doing a FD oil change.

Ta. I see there's a drain plug now. As above, is the filler plug accessed by removing the rear wheel (and silencer!)?

You are better to use the older method.

Remove wheel. Remove speedo sensor. Unbolt palaver arm. Swing FD backwards and allow oil to drain. Swing it back, reassemble and refill.

The big benefit is you'll recirculate grease in the lower Paralever bearings. It's not much more hassle than using the drain plug and those needle bearings are very costly to replace.

One of these might be an option for filling gearboxes and drives etc :nenau The pump fits on a standard litre bottle

Ok for gearbox cos you fill till its level with filling hole, but need big syringe for FD it needs exact amount no way of knowing otherwise :)

Just done mine with a 100ml syringe i got on evilbay for 3quid. I used 190ml in the FD and 800ml in the box. I poured the little bit of spare into the next bottle of 75w 140 syntrax i have. 😊

Ask Mikeyboy why you shouldn't put 180ml in a FD.........he'll tell you!

Has anyone had any experience of using Mobil1 fully synthetic 75W90 (GL-5) in their 'box and FD? I have a friend who had just gone his gearbox on am 115GSA and comments on it remarkable transformation, thus I am considering it for my 1200GSA.

Pouring the little extra into the FD would be far more useful. Mine runs fine with 220ml.

Am I completely mistaken, or is this not the grade of oil we're supposed to use in our FD's and gearboxes - not 75w-140 ?

BMW reduced the FD oil level because they were getting warranty claims for oil leaks that were actually breather blow-by.
But the original design called for 200ml and most drives behave fine with 220ml.
Running with a low oil level risks accelerated bearing wear in the long term but it won't cause many short term oil "leak" warranty problems.
Simple fix use less oil.
Running a high oil level risks the breather blowing out some oil but it's frankly not a big issue. Mine has 220ml and leaked only when I forgot to fit the speedo sensor O ring.
Mikey repairs a lot of worn final drives so should be well placed to spot those caused by under lubrication.

Cheers :thumby:

I've put in 10ml more than the Haynes manual says should be used. but next time I will add 200ml. I will be changing it every 5k just like my engine and gearbox oil. Overkill :nenau god knows but that's what im going to do.:D

Why are some people saying they are using 75W-140 oil rather than 75w-90?
Is it better?
Is 75w-140 now the recommended grade for gearboxes and FD's?
