My daughter has started a job in Stockholm. Does anyone know of a ferry route that would take me to Gothenburg, for example, rather than the Hook of Holland, which would add on a considerable number of miles?

It would be a return trip of about 5 or 6 days.
Have a look at the aFerry website. They, I seem to remember, list all the european ferry routes and also show them on a map
The Harwich to Esjberg route is, alas, no more. The nearest you'll get is Newcastle to Ijmuiden (Amsterdam)

Nearest ferry for you would be Harwich to Hook of Holland. Barry to Harwich is 256 miles. Barry to Newcastle is 334 miles.

I don't think it's going to be worth riding out to see her.
My wife went over on the plane recently from Heathrow to Stockholm and it was about £100 return which was peanuts really in comparison.
Looks like I'm going to give it a miss but thank you for all your help.

U could considering a bike out there. I recently checked this for Norway and Iceland and prices can be okay
There's limited passenger travel on the Imminghan - Brevik ferry, Brevik is about 200 miles from Gothenberg (but the ferry may actually go to Gothenberg as its detailed in the booking details)

Pk. So there is s ferry to Gothenburg. Do you just ride on.
I haven't used if for years but last time we just took the car on and went to the passenger accommodation. Used to take 24 hours and not much to do so take a book!
New dfds route open from Zeebrugge to Gothenburg as of June 2019, mainly freight but according to the website there are limited passenger and vehicle places available..........ll states no under 5 year olds or pets
