Hi

I have a Givi XS308 tank bag which I had fitted to my Multistrada and have been using on my GS for the last 8 months. I was at my friendly local dealer the other day and when one of them spotted the fitting ring on the filler cap, visibly paled and implied that these things were the work of the devil, would cause no end of damage to the filler cap, tank invalidate warranty etc and should be removed forthwith. Funnily enough, he then suggested that it be replaced with a genuine BMW item specifically designed and priced accordingly. Needless to say I declined his kind offer and sheepishly retreated duly chastised for having the stupidity for installing such a device on my bike. Is anyone aware of any failures resulting from the use of this type of tank bag installation and in particular on a GS or is this just a dealer warranty avoidance/sell a genuine part ploy?

Cheers

Rob

OMG you've not got a tank mounted bag have you? , I knew a guy with one of these and he got a puncture............:P

Who was it in Motorrad Central that was giving you that flannel?

So that's why I got a puncture the other week:blast

I don't know how the Givi tank ring attaches, I've the SW Motech stuff and I cannot see any possible way this could invalidate the warranty on the fuel tank filler unless you attached it with 6 inch nails. Call my cynical if you wish but there's just the teeniest hint of a possibility that the dealer wanted to sell you a tank bag.

I've had my GS in for a service with the tank ring attached and there was not a mention from the dealer of it.

Only way it's likely to invalidate the warranty - is if you accidently drop cigarette ash into the tank while fitting it.................. :blast

I can see it could happen but it would depend on how heavy you load up the tank bag, the tank is basically just a very thick polypropylene bag that the screws fasten in to...it's not metal!

Rainbow BMW told me that they have known failures, hence the reason that the BEEMA bags mounts differently.

Interesting.

But - the Givi mount doesn't (as far as I can tell on the one bike I have it fitted) - does not stress the tank.

Well I have the SW Motech tank bag and locking ring on my LC but I don't have a whacking great big tank bag.

However if you have stripped the decorative top panel from around the tank cap which is not part of the tank you will see that the tank ring mounting screws do actually screw in small captive brass nuts that are moulded or pressed into the black polypropylene fuel tank, so in essence the plastic tank takes the brunt of the load, however the top panel does add quite a bit of lateral support.

I'm not worried about mine breaking, 'cos I don't carry the kitchen sink in my tank bag...well not quite!

I only carry spare visor, earplugs, camera & gloves so not unduly concerned. I agree that a heavy load may create a problem though having looked at the tanks fixings. Thanks for the posts. I'll carry on using it.
