just checked my rear wheel and I can feel some play ,I am sure it is at the pivolt because if I put a flat screw driver between the joint and push it with my foot it goes ,the bike is a 2004 with 12000 miles on the clock ,should there be free play on the centre stand ,I have always had jap bikes which never have free play ,if it is the pivolt bearings easy or hard job to replace at home
thanks Malc

if you are sure its the paralever bearings, they are fairly straightforward to replace.
the r/h one is a standard 30042rs bearing and will come out fairly easily if the casing is heated, later bikes have a circlip to help locate the bearing, early ones do not.
the l/h one is a bit tricky as it is only held in by being an interferance fit,it will need to be pressed out and the new one pressed back in to the correct depth,if this bearing is knackered , the spacer sleeve will need replacing as well.
dont be tempted to start hammering the bearings out, you could break the casing.
you need access to a hydraulic press and a means of heating the housing/cooling the bearings

Search for

Steptoes guide to tell whether its pivot bearings or the final drive bearing.
It,s about as comprehensive as it gets

Thanks
On the left hand side ,If I heat the casting could the bearing press out with big vice as i have used this method on other things to press bearings ,just one thing should these fail with just 12000 on the clock ,or is it just luck of the draw

Had the same with my 2008 bike.

Its most likely the needle roller bearings in the left hand side, they only move through a small range of travel so tend to wear in the same place. A doddle to replace, I heated my drive casting with my heat gun then drifted them out with a snug fitting socket and a lump hammer. I also replaced the trunnion and the felt sealing washer. I'm just up the road from you in Fareham if you need a hand.

12000 miles seems low to be suffering trunnion bearing failure. Mine was rough at 50K but was not showing any slack. Opening it up will show if the races and rollers have flatted.
