I wonder I anyone can help me with this query?

My bike is a 92 R100R with 47,000 miles.

When I wheel her back from a parking bay I can hear a clicking sound from the shaft drive. It's not at a rate of one click per wheel revolution - imagine trying to say click click click out loud as fast as you can - that is the speed I am talking about.

I don't think there is any noise in the forward direction.

Unless someone knows this symptom I presume I must be careful riding the bike as a failure could cause a lock up?

Thanks in advance for any tips

possibly the drive shaft. or it could be something catching on the wheel. don't ride it until you know what is wrong with it. The rear wheel locking unexpectedly at any speed has great potential for an unfortunate outcome especially in tight heavy traffic.

PS dibs on your boots :P

Thank you. It's now under investigation at Vines - MOT failure due to rumblings from rear of the final drive. (To be fair I did advise them of the noise)

They said worst case it could be around three hours labour.

I said no, worst case is I ride off without fixing it and it locks up and throws me down the road !

I think the bikes are ironing out the Beta testers first----.

And who has 13 years to wait? - they havent sorted out the problems with the 650 injected singles yet.

It's the gearbox bearings and a likely bill of £990

The basic repair is around £775 but while the bike is stripped down that far it seems wise to overhaul the clutch at the same time.

Hey ho! It's all with my heart, not my head......

They are great bikes, I'll never sell it. :bounce1

WHAT .

I've been re-building gearboxes for members for a while now - Strip, clean, replace all bearings, springs & seals for around £250.

More if I have to replace damaged parts.

(But then I don't make any money out if it :blast).

Someone must be charging BMW's hourly rate .

Bob.

The going rate in Oz is around $2,700-(GBP1,800-) including a high /low 1st & 5 th. although for that they don't reshim it, just replace the shims the way they came out.
All parts including bearings are charged a BMW Oz's list, which is about 250% of the prices on most Fiches, and five times what the bearing suppliers charge.

Most people just buy a second hand one outright from Motorworks, which costs around $1,000- landed, then sell the duffer on EBAY for a couple of hundred.

Shimming does take time. I spend about 1.5 hours with a shimming plate, depth micrometer & external micrometer. I take around 8 measurements on each bearing/housing and write it all down. Then I carefully juggle the shims to get the actual thickness of each stack right using the micrometer.

Just as well its a 'retirement hobby' :D.

The boxes seem to work well after all this attention to detail :augie .

Yes - it is a BMW main agent, I have no independent "air cooled" specialists in my circle of contacts.

Anyway she's fixed now, I shall pick her up in the morning

Who's the man!!!! :bow:bow:bow:bow

The final bill was £1012 for gearbox rebuild, new clutch etc and MOT.

PAINFUL but I'm really pleased that Vines were able to source all the bits and repair a 21 year old bike with no fuss or drama.

She was running beautifully this morning and the clutch was nice and light.

I think she deserves a good clean this weekend (Vines know I won't let their valeters anywhere near my bikes with their little pressure hoses)

Have a great Easter everyone :beerjug:

And now the speedo light has gone out. Next day, after booking Vines it came on again. Last night, after cancelling Vines , it's off again.

When Vines tried to order a bulb - "part not available"

Aren't old bikes fun ??????
