Hiys guys.replaced my final drive bearing last month.my seal has been weeping ever since.i.ve polished the crown bearing and pushed the new seal in flush with the housing.would a tight crown bearing cause this leek?how easy should the final drive turn by hand.any ideas appreciated in advance.cheers guys I.d be fooked without ya.

Did you reuse the old seal or fit a new one? Is the weep from the outer edge of the seal or the inner part? Check where the inner part of the seal contacts is spotless and smooth.

Its a new seal.bearing surface is spotlessly clean.the leak is around the inner part which is in contact with the bearing.

Firstly the seal does not seal the bearing. It seals the hub (rotating part) with the casing (fixed part). The hub needs to be clean and free from corrosion where the seal sits. Also the seal should be pushed in just far enough so that it sits level (flush) with the casing outer surface and no further.

The HUB is spotless.and the seal is flush.

Then if the surfaces are clean, and the seal is fitted the right way round (writing outwards) and it's sitting flush, then I suspect the seal is damaged in some way.

I doubt very much that the bearing has anything to do with the seal leaking, because the seal should not be touching the bearing.

Ian what I meant by polished the crown bearing was cleaning up the HUB with some wet and dry paper till nice and smooth.stands a chance it could be the new seal another one will be on order.but can anyone answer my question will an incorrectly shimed final drive cause a new seal to leak?

DOH.....

Try tapping the seal in a bit more. It maybe running on the worn part (where the previous seal sat) of the hub so pushing it in a bit more may see it running on an unworn section. Unless your polishing has now worn it all down :D
