Final drive survival register

Demonic possession of the speedo and rapid flashing of the red triangle of death.

Burning smell........

Give it some welly.

05 1200,

61k,

wheelied all the time, ridden hard as you like very often, including winter, never washed,no corrosion.

on orginal everything except discs, regular oil changes sometimes.

I keep trying to break it but it just keeps coming back for more.

I am expecting something big to go though:blast

Still Going Strong

2007, 36,000 miles in last two years, change FD every 8,000 ish.IMHO these are an awesome machine. Fast enough for the real world and handle well above my skills/ability. My fuel pump controller will never fail because I carry jump leads, and the EWS will last for ever _ spare also carried !! Just bought a new exhaust header, am going to dig the cat out of the old one to see how it goes !! :beerjug:

54 plate 24,000 miles plenty 'hard' off road. Does worry me it's gona go and ruin the best bike experience I've had.

Does getting the oil changed really help? Mines under warranty so it more about inconvenience.

05 1200gs with 60,000 miles. All original except the oil which I change every 6000 miles. I do not use Castrol XAF xo or whatever its called. There is absolutely no lateral play in the bearings. A very happy FD.

55 1200RT , 24k and nada , a mystery cut out issue when traveling in heavy traffic or changing down , which was resolved .But tech couldnt tell me what the problem was ( 3 things were done ) or what solved it. ESA/ damper went at 18k , warranty payed out.
My sealed for life FD oil is changed every 2 years , as per schedule ( which was introduced quietly 3 years ago:D) and is £40 a pop.

I changed the FD oil today, the sensor had loads of filings on it and the oil was really black,it had been in there 4k miles:augie
there is a bit of play in the pinion shaft and on the rear wheel when its warm,Mikey sez its within limits at the moment.

Maybe a overhaul is due before it goes pop:rob

How about half that :nenau

50k would impress me after the tales of many that have knackered four in this time and some who have not managed to get to the first service before the FD blew up.

2005 GS in Saudi Arabia, 55,000 hard miles so far, FD still going, a bit of side play when I waggle the wheel but I am not sure if it is the wheel bearing or the FD pivot bearings. I have only had the bike 4 months, 2500 miles, previous owner had 2 speeds - full speed and full stop. He now has a 2010 GS-A.

I have a friend in Johannesburg who has had a few GS's - his is over 100,000miles and he changed the wheel bearing as a preventitive measure.

Dave, please keep us posted on 'dig the cat out' as I baulk at >£300 for new headers.
Thanks, Peter

no problems touch wood , changed oil at 10000 miles was all clear . changed oil at 14000 miles but it was black . now at 16000 . sometimes ignorance would be bliss . reading the bad luck stories are not good for the mind body or soul . looking forward to my next fd oil change .....

2006 1200GSA - 34,000 miles. Returning from France last Friday, speedo went loopy, red warning triangle and "Brake Failure" light came on and stayed on. 400miles later at Calais, driving onto the train - minus helmet - noted nasty grinding/whining noise on taking up power. Running fine otherwise. Booked into MHMotorcycles at Bromley to service and sort, but sounds like rear drive bearing which knocks out the speed / ABS sensor in rear wheel. Needing to sell another kidney by the sounds of it! :tears

I don't get BMW, this is another issue with the GS. Why do they insist on old change every 24 months? and why do they charge £40?
Oil costs £9 and you surely can't charge labour as this can be done during the service as this can be left to drain as the engine oil drains.

Beggers belief. Mine has done just over 6k on a 2008 GS. Oil changed every 12 months. I am considering changing every 6 months, as for £9 it could not do any harm.

04 plate, only used for holidays but still amassed 52K, some of those in the Sahara sand and many more charging up and down fun roads in the Alps often two up, and nowt to report.:thumb2

Not all dealers charge £40.. normally around the £12 mark IME.
