Hi guys was at rainbow in Rotherham yesterday final drive bearings gone booked in for repair bike is 2010 twin cam 24500 mls never been thrashed ,thinking of going orange .? :(

Thats bad luck however that is a warrenty job so no cost to you surely? Going orange? I don't think they are without their problems either. I would stick with the GS. I can understand your are pissed off but I would be getting into them for some sort of deal the bearings of a bike 2 years old should not be failing after only 24k miles. You could have pulled the bearings yourself and replaced them its not really a difficult job if you have the facilities, but I still think I would be getting on to BMW about it.

I wouldn't dismiss the GS just yet, there are penty of 50k + bikes still on their original FD, including mine which is coming up on 70k and it has been thoroughly abused!

If it's warranty smile and carry on. Stick yourself £500 in your sideboard and when the bearings go again in a few years, get it rebuilt by Sciminger and you will be good for another few years.

Work out the costs of chains and sprockets on a KTM in the same period and you'll be surprised how close it it:thumb

Hi Sarg
If its a warranty job then those newly fitted bearings are also under warranty! You cannot just fit a part under warranty and then resile yourself form obligation there after. If the bearings are replaced under warranty then the new bearings will also have a warranty period even if the bike is within a few months of the original warranty expiring. Thing is, is the warranty parts and labour? I would have thought that the labour part would be the largest percentage of the bill.

New parts provided under warranty do not reset the clock so to speak, you only get that if you buy the parts. The purchase price includes paying for the warranty/insurance which, of course, you never paid for when you got your free parts under warranty.

Shouldn't happen on a 1200,
Shouldn't have happened on the 1150
BMW WOULD NEVER LET IT HAPPEN ON AN M3 ????
Never mind saving money that you would have used for chains and sprockets and pay for repairs in the future.
I know of despatched CX500's, Kawasaki GT's and Suzuki GS's that have 150,000 miles on their original final drives with no problems at all .
Conclusion has to be poor design/ sub- standard parts or drives that have been poorly put together.

Totally agree Neil....... My mate has bought a brand new ktm smt he's had loads of grief with the fueling a low speeds it's been back twice and now the ABS has failed, Not all bikes are problem free.

Thanks for replies guys well I took the extended warranty out because I had rouble with my 2006 gs so should be ok has for the BMW cars same shit there Ihavw a BMW 535 d and have had bearings on rear axle replaced at 35k so not much better than BMW bikes

Likewise others are on FD number four by 50K.

Most shaft drives on Jap bikes last past 100k, and often much more, Honda CX's and Yamaha XJ's to name but two, and you would have though another 3 decades of R&D and tehnology improvements should mean the modern stuff would be even better.

As mentioned, BMW would not allow cars to go out with Diffs that fail repeatedly at low mileages, but seem to think they can sell any old crap off the back of the badge to motorcyclists.

Time for a Tenere :thumb2

Well I don't agree with the comments about the BMW car rear duffs as I had my diff done at 35k .I repair transmissions and diffs and have a few 1 series and 3 series rear diff bearing failures BMW tell you that you cannot buy the bearings and that you will need a new diff sir ..if anyone needs any of the special bearings I have some on stock. :thumb

the cars are worse than the bikes, had a z4, had loads of problems, spring snapping, window regulators seizing, failing wiper motors, all common faults and very fustrating, the main crown bearings failed on my 08 gsa, 12k, bought the bearing and quality viton double lipped seals for £40 which im not happy about but still the 3rd of the cost of a new chain and sprockets

Are you talking about the "American" z4? The first one that was made in the US? If so, they were widely known as problematic, and to be avoided. I'm on my 9th BMW car, and have NEVER had to put in a warranty claim on any of them.:rob

probably! i had it from new in 03, i sold it last year with 130,000mls on it, its like the bikes, i loved driving it but the niggling problems spoiled it a bit but i still couldnt bare to part with it, i tried a super 10 at the nw200 and couldnt wait to get back on my gsa, nothing has the feel and presence of that bike imo even tho the fuc**er broke down in ireland (electrical prob) and i was waiting 8 hrs to be recovered and had all the hassle of getting it ferried home, the day i got home i went straight to CMC YAMAHA who offered my a cracking deal in p/x i thought for reliability and piece of mind ill give it a go, i didnt do it! i kept thinking about the 5-6 years of gs-ing have been the best motorcycling by far in 30yrs of riding

My 2010 GSA final drive pinion brg failed at 18,000kms, replaced foc. I got the dealer to change the oil at 1000km service. I did not change oil myself, I did on the previous 1200 when new and every 20K kms. It lasted to 90K when the new owner changed it due some noise but no leaks. It would be easy to put too little oil in if you do not use a syringe and work slowly. I think a sight glass or level plug might save a few failures.
