Hi

Just trying to find out what I need for video editing on a P.C. If I connect a video camera to a P.C. via firewire, are both sound, and video signals, transfered ? I am told that if you use USB, only the video signal is transfered.

Any advice very much appreciated.

Cheers

I have a Canon digital camcorder and edit on PC via a Firewire cable. I get sound and video in and out.
I've never tried the USB connection.

Firewire

Is the route to take. It will transfer the full "DV" signal to your PC. However, It will take up a huge amount of space on your hard drive so consider a separate hard drive or partitioning.

Get your self started with a very small project, so just digistise 10 minutes of rushes for your edit. If you do encounter any errors with your PC or the software, you don't want to be wrestling with 2 hours of media wedged on your hard-drive!

Good luck, you'll have loads of fun, be up till the small hours for weeks and discover untold ways of offending friends and family with your edits.

PM me if you have any specific questions

I'm in the same query area. I was in PC World yesterday looking at Pinnacle Studio Plus v9.

I plan to edit my Camcorder tapes on my PC - I have about 90Gb of spare space (- is that enough?) and then burn a DVD before deleting what's on the PC.

Does that sound feasible?

Is there better s/ware than Pinnacle?

Windows

Windows Movimaker works fine for me and it's free with XP.

Give it a go.

RE USB / Firewire there is a distinct inprovement in quality and you can control the camera using Firewire (I - LINK)

Get a cheap card a novatech if you pc has not got one.

Yes, Adobe Premiere Pro V1.5 is the best, its a pro video editing suite and like all Adobe software they assume you know what your'e doing, Pinnacle is less advanced but more user friendly, both have the essential time line display.

Try windows movie maker or Nero's Nerovision first as a test then you can decide what you need.
