HI guys,

I went into the local dealer today to order a new GS adventure and was confronted with a problem regarding the first gear. I had in mind that I wanted the short gear box (particularly first gear) for off-road. The problem is that I can have the bike with the normal G-Box in June or I have a considerable wait for the short. Question. Is there a big differnence between the short 1st and the normal? I rode a friend of mines GS a little while ago and found that the 1st was very long even for the road. Is it worth waiting?

Thanks for any advice

I have a regular 1150GS with the taller 1st gear. Before this bike I had the 1100GS which has a lower 1st gear. It took some time to get used to the taller first - and that's without doing much off-road work.

My 2d worth would be that if you are comtemplating any off-road or much low speed city work, I'd go for the lower gear option - wait or no wait!

Do you intend to go off road, ride a lot with pillion &/or heavily loaded? I seldom do the above and don't find the higher 1st gear a problem. However, if you're going to do these things regularly, then you should give serious consideration to ordering the lower gear. How long do you intend to own the bike? If you opt to get the wrong bike to avoid a wait in delivery, you may regret it for a long time.....

I've actually got a place in the alps in France where I intend to keep the bike. There's a lot of dirt and a lot of big hills and this is where I'll do most of my riding. A lot of it's rocky and rough and I do find that I use low range sometimes in the Landy. I do also intend to keep the bike for some time so I guess it's worth the wait no matter how painful it is.

Thanks for the advice

I bought a adv with std 1st because I was advised not to buy the enduro 1st. I have found the the std far too tall. In real terms 10mph (approx) at tickover with no clutch slipping.

Can anybody tell me how slow the enduro 1st is in mph at tickover. Telling me the gear ratio means bugger all to me!!!

I am now thinking of sending it in for the enduro 1st to be fitted ,no doubt it'll cost an arm and a leg.
My fault for listening I suppose.... By the way I do use it fully loaded, off road (MAG bike rallys - muddy campsites) and two up nearly all the time.
