I've had my new GSA for a few weeks now, and have been blown away by it. They really are exceptional. However, I've been preparing to go on my first camping trip of the year, and have even bought myself a good quality air bed, and a pump to inflate it with. That's where I've come across the first problem. That is, when I plug in my pump (4A, and with a Din adaptor) it runs for a second, and then shuts down. At first, I thought it had blown the fuse, but it would still charge my phone. I went back to the dealer today, and asked one of the technicians there what the problem is. He just shrugged his shoulders, and said you can't run a pump off it. I found this staggering. This is a bike that is meant to be the ultimate adventure/touring bike, and I would expect a lot of owners would want to run pumps etc off it. Anyway, I then went to my local independent bike mechanic (MOT time for my GSX 1400). He explained that with the new canbus electrics fitted to these bikes, the ECU acts as the fuse box, and will shut systems down if it detects a large draw on the system. I wouldn't have thought that 4 AMPS is a huge load. The question is, can I do anything about it? Is there a way of modifying the system? Any thoughts chaps.

I have an extra socket on my F800GS, also Canbus, and it works perfectly well for an air pump.

Have a look on Nippy Norman’s or the like.

Yes as Polygon says.
Fit another socket directly from the battery or make a lead to connect to the charger lead if you have one.
It was the same on 1200,s with canbus electric s. 2 amp max approximately.
Enjoy you new steed.

This has been a feature of the bikes since the first R1200's.

If you want to run anything over the limit of the canbus then you need to run a fused supply direct to the battery.

Having said that you are riding an 'adventure' bike, what kind of adventurer uses an airbed?

Assuming you have an optimate, you can get the same style of connector from any model airplane shop and replace the connector on your pump with this; allows you to run the pump straight of the battery.

I did this with the pump I carry for punctures (in my tyres, not my airbed / armbands / unmentionables) :P

A soft one!!!!!!

Leave that bastard paraphernalia well alone. Get an Exped inflatable mattress. Rolls up really small with integrated pump.

Feckin 'ell...

You ride a BMW now, you don't..... CAMP......

Check in to a hotel you peasant, or you'll wake up with it laying on top of you or stolen.

Just saying like... :)

Not fit for purpose!

Return to dealer, demand a full refund, quoting (verbatim) the sale of goods act, whilst standing on the Bikers’ Charter, which make you seem taller and your balls larger.

PS Did you not think to ask your tame independent mechanic how to power the pump, if the bike’s own system wasn’t up to the task?

PPS It’s amazing that you didn’t sus (to use the vernacular) the answer, since you’d cracked it when you singlehandedly managed the tricky matter of your heated nappy:

I wire mine direct to the battery, and have the lead sticking out on the left hand side of the bike, and it can be easily stowed away behind a section of the frame.

As said

If you have an optimate style fly lead wired to the battery of the bike it can be used for charging but also with the right connector fitted run an air pump

I’m thinking of entering the reality program SAS who dares wins as I sleep on a thermarest :D

As above - connect to the battery - you’ll be fine.

It might be rated at 4A but the pumped could well take a lot more than that at startup and this could be the cause of it tripping out.

I use a fused sper line that I use for both charging the batterie and for any other high power acc that I might use but only have a 7.5 fuse in it

This ^^^^^ my my 2008 used to shut down the power due to canbus. As stated above reverse a charging lead. Check polarity with a meter and Roberts your uncle

Exactly. Bloody peasants. Even BMW knows that camping is NOT an option for a GS owner, which is why they won’t allow such silliness.
