Fitting heated grips.

Hello folks. My 1200GS doesn't have heated grips and as I often ride from Wales to Scotland I suffer cold hands. I fitted heated grips on my old Aprilia Pegaso. No problem there as the electrics are straight forward.£40 well spent. I'd intend fitting BMW heated grips and I'm wondering if this is a straight forward job as the electric system is apparently different to the norm. Could anyone please explain if this is a simple task or what? I've been told the replacement parts are about £175 (£300 if the dealer does the job)
Thanks,
Clive E.

Talk to Pukmeister as I know that he's just fitted the BMW items to his 12GS. By all accounts it wasn't too bad a job.

Hi Clive, I fitted heated grips to my R1200GS just before Christmas and it is very easy. The parts cost £214 inc Vat, then the dealer needs to hook it up to their computer to 'enable' them at about an hours labour. I was quoted £300 to have them fitted however I asked the dealer nicely if they could enable the grips when the bike went in for its 'battery drain' software update (which is free) so I saved some money. Goodwill goes a long way as I have spent quite a bit at the dealers anyway.

To do the job you will need a set of small TORX screw bits plus a big TORX socket to undo your bar end weight.

Start by removing the bar end weights and the handguards. Note the bar ends are Loctited into place and take a bit of force to undo. On the back of the handlebar switchgear, remove the tiny TORX screws and remove the switch back covers. Inside you will see 2 more screws which hold the switchgear onto the grips, along with 2 locating pegs through the flat plate of the grip (see pic below, LH grip). Remove these screws. On the LH grip, pull back the rubber grip at the opposite end to the bar end weight and you will see 2 small torx screws holding the grip to the bar (one at 12 O clock and one at 6 o clock). Undo these and the LH grips can be removed. Replace with the electrically heated item, plug in the tiny multiplug to the switchgear and refit everything. No glue, no mess, no fuss, simple.

On the throttle twistgrip side, its slightly different as the grip is clamped by a shiny metal band onto the bar and also you need to undo the throttle cable. Unscrew the outer cable from the grip end (knurled elbow) then pull some slack into the twistgrip cable and pull out the bowden cable from the throttle twistgrip spindle. Unbolt the clamping bolt and remove the throttle twistgrip (having removed handguard bar end etc already). Replace the RH switchgear for the unit with the heated grip switch, fit the new heated twistgrip and clamp in to place then plug mini wiring connector in, insert the nipple of the bowden cable and then replace everything you undid.

Ride to the dealer and get them to enable the grip function.

Job done.

If you do it yourself and get stuck PM me, though it is all really easy and is self-explanatory.

Part numbers are:

Heated Grip 61 31 2 352 054
Heated Grip 61 31 7 671 605
Switch Gear 61 31 7 670 038

Pic below is of the old parts once removed, heated grips are near identical except for a small wire with a tiny multiplug on the end for each grip.

Thanks for the advice Adam.
The bike's off to North Oxford BMW tomorrow for it's 18K service + some warranty work so I'll quiz them to see what deal is best for me. I've no worries with mechanical work as it used to be my trade but I've no tech manual for the 1200 so any good advice, especially from someone who's done the same work, is appreciated.
Cheers mate,
Clive E.

Heated grips for an 1150

I'm just about to order some grips for my 1150. Is the fitting procedure the same and do they have to be "enabled" at the dealers also or is this a specific feature to the 1200s?

The 'enabling' is to tell the computer on the 1200 that the grips are there, as everything is controlled by it including accessories.

You should be fine with the 1150 as it is standard 12V electrics and no computer involved, though I haven't a clue about the mechanics of fitting the grips themselves on an 1150. Shouldn't be too hard though.

Just retro fitted heated grips on my 1100 and it was relatively straight forward. The BMW instructions that came with the kit tell you to dismantle the left and right switch gear and remove the bars but in hindsight it isn't necessary. The connectors for the switch and the grips were all in place just not in use so it was a simple plug and play job. I just wasted time because I did all the switch disassembly as instructed but it wasn't necessary . The handle bars had the holes for the wiring so it was just a question of threading the cables through, removing the bars ends and positioning the grips . I would think now I know what is involved it shoudln't be more than about 1 hour work on an 1100 so reckon on about 15 to 20 hours on a 1200 and you should be about right ;)
