As those of you who've bought these know . . . the bars are a b*****d to fit and the instructions come in German only. For the benefit of those tempted to buy and fit them I've produced a .pdf file with fitting instructions in English. Be patient you've got to see some piccies first.

Here's Uncle Gerald with his new bars on:

As you can see the bars wrap around the rear of the cylinder and (I think) offer better protection in the event of a "drop".

There's one really important bolt fitting that causes many people problems . . . at the rear of the bars where the new bolt has to go through the bars, the rider footrest hanger, the rear subframe, and into the gearbox housing. My instructions make it clear how to deal with this.
Here's the bolt in question.

OK, if you like what you see and are tempted to buy and fit, or for those already in possession, I hope these instructions are helpful.

BTW they're in .PDF format so if you can't open the file send me a private message with your e-mail address and I will mail you a Wordfile as an attachment. I also have a larger .PDF file with a diagram for the bolt placcements. If you want that too, do likewise.

Good luck.

Not wishing to sound smug, but I managed to fit a pair of H+P bars in about an hour having read the advice elsewhere on the BB. I didn't find the German instructions too much of an obstacle as 'mm' is the same in both English and German.

But how could you tell your "links vom recht "?

Seriously, this thread was in response to a request in another forum for help/guidance. Some people don't have your confidence.

hepco and becker bars

Simon , I would really appreciate the "word" version of your instructions. Not bieng very good with computers I haven't worked out how to send private messages! is it possible to send this to me somehow? Thanks John B:confused:

John:
At the bottom of this message, click on the button that says "profile", then when that sceen comes up, click on "Send an e-mail" and I will return an e-mail to you with the Word.doc as an attachment.
Or you can send me your address by private mail (same method as above) or by e-mail and I will send you a paper copy.

hepco and becker

I have found the perfect way of fitting the bars in three easy steps
1 spend three hours yourself and a friend drinking coffee looking bemused.
2 give up ,and kick bars round garage floor swearing profusely
3 ring andy scotland co-ordinator spending a fortune on mobile phone call ,then he will e mail you pics of his bars fitted.
See easy when you know how
Cheers Wes

ENGINE BARS

Simon,

Thanks for your efforts in producing this article, they have just arrived and I will be fitting them tonight.

I noticed that you have a tank cover, where did it come from?

The reason I ask is that I bought my GS NEW in Grafatan (dark gun metal silver) before I'd seen the colour, and to be honest I find it a bit dull. The idear was a multi colored tank cover (say like your but Grafitan instead of blue) do the seat to match and hey prestow, a brilliant bike thats not dull. Or if anyone has any better idears I'd like to hear them.

Good lord, whatever you do don't ask Andy, it took us two evenings to fit his bars, and in the end we had to stick them on with pritt stick, sellotape and six inch nails!:D :D :D :D

Andy, if only I'd realised it was possible it would have saved me huge fines in the swear box!

Jenks:
It's a made-to-measure tank cover from a company called Baglux. See their website here
http://www.baglux.co.uk/tc.asp

They actually make the covers to match the existing bike, so my blue and white bag reproduces the blue and white paint job on the tank. You can't get "one-off" combinations. For your Graphitan bike the best you could do to liven it up with a Baglux is to buy a one-colour BMW 1150GS cover in either silver, red, black, or mandarin yellow.

fitting instructions

Simon,
Could you 're-post' the link to your instruction sheet - it seems to have dissapeared from this thread (along with your piccies).
Thanks!

Ralphy:
I'll have a word with Paul G. He has to do it. Meanwhile, send me an e-mail and I'll send you a Word version by return.

Fitting Hepco & Becker bars

Sorted!

I have just finished fitting the bars, took about one and half hours - THANKS to Simon Eassoms guideline sheet.

God knows how long it would have taken without the guidelines, though - I think it not acceptable for these to be sent out with just the German fitting guide; these things are not cheap & we should expect instructions that are understandable.

BTW, I found it easier to remove the tank than moving it back; easy because the fuel lines had 'quick release' connectors installed. Is this new to the latest models - as I seem to recall advice on a thread to fit them as an after-market item.

Motobins told me that they had sold a lot of these bars recently; so anyone trying to fit 'em over Xmas is welcome to call me on 07831 415387 if they have a query.

Simon,

THANKS, a brilliant set of instructions. Fitted the bars in no time.

You saved me loads of time trying to suss out the German one's.

Very, very helpful thanks again Simon.

Glad they helped, guys. It does seem that getting a pair that fit straight out of the box is a matter of luck. My right side bars were at least an inch out of alignment both vertically and horizontally with the rear gearbox bolt. Other people have had a perfect fit. Or maybe my bike's bent!
Happy riding.
:)
Ralphy . . . it's certainly preferable removing the tank as you did, but without quick-release connectors it's a not as straight-forward. I wrote the instructions for the most uncomplicated option; i.e., with tank moved but not removed. [BTW - I'm only adding this for the benefit of others who might read your post and think that tank-off is the only way to go.]
