Just got round to having a go at fitting the fuel line quick disconnects from Touratech. They came with some clamps the operation of which is not obvious. When getting a new side panel from Coopers in Reading I also picked up four fuel line clamps, expecting these to be the same worm drive type already on the bike.

But no, these are a circular housing with a spring steel clip inside, and a sort of detente punched into both. Does the inside get rotated before or after fitting to the pipe?

Any ideas/help?

This is a job that I've just done on my 1150, but using the BMW parts fitted to the GSA and later 1150s.

To do the job, you need a Stanley knife to cut the fuel hose, two MC13.31.7.659.119 (male plug), two MC13.31.7.659.120 (female socket), four MC16.12.1.176.918 clamps and a pair of pincers to tighten the single-use clamps.

To orient the disconnects the same way as the factory, the higher pipe has female at the tank end, the lower pipe the opposite way around.

The parts cost £22.92 plus VAT - the whole job takes 30 minutes max.

I've just fitted an Adventure tank on my '00 R1150GS and was thinking of QD fittings as I put everything back together.

Does the Adv have a QD fitted on the pipe connecting the two lobes underneath the tank. It would seem to be a useful mod otherwise, you still have to pull one end off to get the tank off.

I don't have a GSA but did ogle one at the Ace last week and the answer is 'yes' but it didn't appear to be the same as the fittings on the main fuel feeds.

On the basis that the BMW parts are cheaper than Touratech, I'd get yourself down to your nearest dealer.

Paul, I have the Touratech 41 litre tank.

The crossover pipe which sits in front of the fan belt cover, has a smaller (scaled down) version of the standard fuel line QD snap connector. As the fuel flow on the crossover isn't as critical as the pump driven fuel, the pipe is smaller and so is the size of the connector.

Having eyballed my friends Adventure, I've guessed it's the same size as the crossover fitting on the Touratech.

As far as I can work out, all of these fittings emanate from one factory in North America.

On my Co2 LASER machine, the exact same connectors are used, but once again they are another size, larger.

I would recommend that you acquire some spare "O" rings. These are the rubber rings that actually seal the connectors. The problem is that their contact with petrol makes the rubber swell, this of course helps to seal the fuel system but makes them almost impossibe to re-click the connectors after one has removed the fuel tank. The spare rubbers I have, fit inside a small zip-lock plastic bag in the tool box under the pillion seat.

Paul,

yes it does, but it's not an 'in-line' connector; it connects at 90 deg. I'm at work at the moment, so can't get you a pic, but it's a std fitment on the Adv, so your local dealer should be able to supply the parts.

I've also fitted a one way valve in the crossover tube, allowing fuel to feed from left to right, but not vice versa, to ensure there's always the maximum amount of fuel in the right lobe, where the fuel pick up is located (useful if you're low on fuel & use the sidestand - stops the pump complaining).

Great idea Mike. Where did you get it from?

I knew you were going to ask that..... I got it mail order from somewhere in the US after reading about one of the guys (Rubber Cow) on the ADVrider site doing it. He's had problems with the bit of kit I've used (it's plastic and ended up losing its 'one way' properties, though mine's still working) and has fitted a brass replacement. I'm at work at the moment, but I'll try & track down the dealer I bought from over the next couple of days.
If you go to the ADVrider site (here ) and do a search for 'Fuel Tank Mod' (I think - the author is Rubber Cow), you should find full details of the mod (he had a balance tube fitted to a std GS tank).

Cheers

Mike:)

Thanks Mike, I remember the thread. He had some guy weld two outlet tubes on a std tank, similar to the ones on the Adv tank. I'll check into it.... I know I've seen brass one-way valve somewhere. I think it was a apart of the original stuff John Jensen posted before he started his "Superlative Syphon Sucker" business.

Touratech disconnects

Just before fitting the Touratech quick disconnects, I noted that the Touratech website says the 2-way ones are not suitable for 850/1100/1150GS as the cross-sectional area is too small. Guess which ones I've got?

Off to Coopers in Reading to get the right ones - ta for the info Greg.
