Hi gents

Unfortunatelly my beloved 02gsa failed to start this morning. The battery voltage was 12.08 this morning and when i hit the start button didnt start it and heard that chattering flat battery noise. I tried a few more times but no way so i stopped before damage the starter motor.

My voltage was 12.22 last week. I dont ride it everyday im afraid. It was on solar charger but seems not to charging properly in those cold days. :nenau

My question is you think it s time for a new replacement battery or i can charge it somehow and keep using.

Thanks:clap

I presume the noise you describe is coming from the starter motor. Check all the connections first, battery terminals and starter motor connections. You could also then check the voltage drop when you try to start it. A big drop could mean you need a new battery but could be caused by a problem in the starter. Starter problems are not unknown and well documented on here, try a search, you should find plenty. If the starter is OK then try charging the battery if you can.

And when you do get it started check the charging rate, hopefully before you rush out and buy a new battery. I used to get customers coming into the garage puzzled because they bought a new battery and three days later the new one is flat. If the charging system has failed a new battery is not much help.

You can jump start the beast without having to get at the battery just by removing the cover over the starter.

I hope that helps a little

Voltage is no real indicator of capacity

If you want to jump start or just to charge with out removing the tank ??

Remove the starter cover and the uppermost terminal on the starter is positive

Put the positive jump lead on there and then use the exhaust clamp for the negative lead You should really do the same for the charged battery source if it is in a vehicle

If it starts with the car battery connected then its the battery.

If it doesn't then its likely you need to look in the starter for grease plate or magnet problems Plenty of info available if you search valeo starter

i checked the voltage at starter motor and its as same as the battery. the battery`s voltage also drops to 7v when to try to start the bike as it was 9v a few weeks ago and also drops to 11.5v when the headlight is on.

i will probably call the AA so i can get a jump start and see if it s the battery or something else.

No load voltage is no measure of battery capacity. But dropping to 7 when the starter is used shows its pretty certain to be shot. Jump lead it from a car battery with engine NOT running. If it starts you have the answer.

I agree with Bendy. Almost certain the battery is the cause. I would repeat that the charging system should be checked just in case. If the RAC are coming to jump start it they should be able to test that for you once the bike is running.

I think that a fully charged healthy battery should have 12.6v without load.

Just out of the two year warranty my own '03 1150GS displayed exactly the same problems. I was ready to replace the battery but it turned out to be just a loose battery terminal causing the problem. The battery actually lasted 9½ years and the charging system apart from the alternator belt is all original at 94,000 miles.

the battery connections seemed alright when i checked though but i have still got suspicious about the battery as it was causing abs fault as well at first a few miles till it gets charged.

Aksel13 get the battery tested ASAP

You can damage a couple of the more voltage sensitive bits if you go on using it with a crap battery

I did today, called the aa and its the battery. The bike started with jump start so i need to replace the battery asap however i ve got another prblem now the bike sounds diffent from the exhaust. It is misfiring. WE cleaned the spark plugs checked a few connections but still sounds like the exhaust has a crack on it.

I cleaned the air filter recently and lift up the tank. i hope i didint unplugged or did something wrong.

just bought a battery for my 05 gsa 40 quid and free postage from allbatteries I bought a 20 amp hr one ,allbatteries .com

check your throttle cables are seated correctly on the throttle bodies. Very common 'fault' when the tank has been disturbed. I'm sure someone will post the infamous picture in a bit :)

Edit, here it is:

Thanks for advice. I'll check it asap . Any chance it might be something else like hall sensor or others?

thanks for the advice guys. the problem is sorted. i bought a new exide gel battery and fit it . and also the throttle cable was not seated properly as u said i put it back and now bike runs as normal. i couldnt believe how that cable affects the bike that much.
i appreciate all of u and close the thread now.
