What about something along these lines?

There are 2 freight boats a week in the summer between Aberdeen and Stavanger. Loads of flights daily, only one on a sat though.

If we had a custom container, fabricated to make it easy to secure bikes and have space of gear. Or, something like what the trackday companys use, some kind of frame you could put your bike on and tie down. I reckon I could sort out somewhere to load and unload them this side, and get it delivered to the docks, but would need someone to help on the norwegian side.

Sound plausable?

Sea Cargo staff in Stavanger were very helpful, once they had seen ID and paperwork they just pointed us to the correct container and let us get on with it, most staff taking an interest in the bikes. The only problem with custom container is possibility of returning empty at a cost to who?? But if a group were to fly/ship bikes both ways that would make a good week or 10 day trip round scandinavia without the 1000 mile return by road- very interesting to many!!

Using containers is wee bit more involved than you think and having your own is full of problems. I've looked at this for my US trips and it doesn't make financial sense and you will have issues with moving the container, insurance etc etc. Using a shipping line like Maersk really is easier as they just put a container where you want it and when although as Thor says, they can be difficult to deal with and if anything goes wrong, you will get the bill......DAMHIK.
