Forest Drives

Nice one from the A68 to Kielder and another one on a thread in the S/S from Mossdale to Clatteringshaw Loch. Anymore in between? And the unclassified road between Newcastleton and Langholm, what's that like?
I'm planning a ride up to S/W Scotland so I'm looking for a good route up there (suitable for fully bagged-up GS's)
I'm away up there in a few days with the wife.....in the Jeep,so a bit of a recce 'round on the way. Any ideas please?

A68 Kielder Forest drive is fine.
You can also do the 'Haul Road' from Kielder to Falstone (Dam). It says it is private but loads of locals use it.
The forest tracks from Lewis burn in Kielder to the Calvert Trust Centre near Bull Crag is also worth a look.

The unclassified road from Newcastleton has some fine views and there is a canny roadside Cafe at Langholm.
The road from Langholm to Samye Lings Tibetan Monastery and then onto St Mary's Loch is also worth a drive.

If you are going to be on the A68 instead of taking a left (approaching from the South) through Kielder you could also take a right at Cottonshopeburnfoot across the military ranges if the red flags are not flying.
You will need a 4x4 to do the inner live range roads.
Check the Otterburn Ranges website for access dates.

And the unclassified road between Newcastleton and Langholm, what's that like?

It goes uphill from Newcastleton or Copshawholm, as it's known locally, over Whita Hill, passing close to the summit of Whita and the Monument to Sir John Malcolm and even closer to the Hugh McDiarmid Memorial and then goes downhill towards the Esk Valley and Langholm.

It's single track with passing places for most of its length with some good gradients and bends.
