fork seal replacement

I sold my R80g/s to a certain DrFaroff of this parish. I preperation for its departure and aquiring an MOT I pulled my bike out of the garage to find out the fork seals have gone.

I've taken the forks out - how easy /difficult is it to replace the seals on an R80G/S without special tools ? The few times I have needed them in the past I have taken them to a workshop.

Just done mine and they're easiest I've ever done. Don't even need to remove the complete units, just drop the bottoms of the stanchions. Lots of good info on here.

It's the big Allen key on the bottom of each fork leg. Just undo it and slide the slider off. The fork seals are easy one the sliders off.

If you've got one an air impact gun makes it very easy.

A new seal for each Allen bolt is a good idea.

Tyre lever that comes in the bike toolkit is perfect and with its rounded edges will not mark anything. Be sure to lube the new seal after cleaning the bore where the seal sits and ensure that you fit the new seal perfectly square using a large socket and mallet (Hold leg in a vice if you have one). DO NOT ovet tighten the nut that you removed on the fork lower to drain the oil, it will shear real easy and then you need a new insert (been there done that!).

If the old seal is reluctant to come out, warm up the fork leg around it with a heat gun or similar -makes a difference.

I heated it anyway, although I don't think it was necessary - thanks for that
