Fork Stanchion recall?

Well, you may have seen different information to me, but I don't believe the sliders/stanchions will be replaced at all unless they show signs of separation. If they have started to separate, then they will most likely be replaced with the current design to which collars have been pre-fitted. I guess if BMW eventually run out of stock of these, which may not be for some time due to the apparently low separation rate, and they have a new version (rumoured to have gone back to a threaded design) then you might get lucky and get these, but only if your existing ones have started to separate.

I therefore suggest you wait until you are absolutely sure that the new design is being used, then go out and abuse the bike such that a gap appears, and present it to the dealer for the replacements to be fitted.

Well whatever the final solution I am happy to wait, will probably trade the bike in next April for a new one.

Just to confuse matters somewhat, I was at Coopers in Tunbridge Wells yesterday for the 6000 mile service and fork mod. I was delighted to find that they had fitted new sliders with the collars already attached. When inspected about a month ago, my forks showed no separation whatsoever.

My bike was checked by Allan Jefferies in Bradford, no gap was identified but they gave me an appointment for the collars the following week. Mine were done in 45 mins. I am surprised that others seem to be struggling to get them done.

Mine was done a couple of weeks ago by Cannons in Braintree. It had <5k on the clock (yes, I do need to use it more) and no signs of anything amiss with the fork tops. I asked, if a bike has had a recall notice is it to check to see if it's ok or is it change the bushes/collars regardless of any visible issues? The service guy told me, exactly that... 'all bikes subject to the recall were to have the modification carried out regardless'.

I asked at Chester Motoradd a couple of weeks ago - reply was " ring back in a month, we haven't got any collars".

That was my understanding, too. Bikes with a gap above a certain measurement were to have the stanchions replaced, for others bushes are applied to existing stanchions.

Had the collars fitted yesterday to my GSA (East Kilbride Motorrad) took them 90 min job done, bike less than a year old and covered over 16000 miles for me it was piece of mind

Parts seem to be restricted due to the number being released to each dealer. When I rang Manchester several weeks a go it was stated they had a long list and due to other work and lack of parts it would run into the new year before they were all done. So I'm on the list somewhere too

No idea. I'd assume they're just ready-fitted with bushes.

So a theoretical question... you get a Safety Recall notice, you try to get it sorted, but the parts are on back order. You now knowingly continue to ride a motorbike that could have a catastrophic failure, god forbid that happens..... how does your insurance view it?? technically you are using a defective vehicle.... So your insurance could be invalid and you could be the wrong side of the law.... like i said "theoretical"

IMHO - I don't see it as any different to any other vehicle recall that involves safety. Insurance companies clearly accept that vehicles are driven to garages for repairs. The only time I can see they would question your cover is if you knowingly rode the bike in a 'dangerous condition.' under the Road Traffic Act. The threshold of this is quite high.

It's not something I'd personally worry about if I had separation, unless it was so bad that the forks could imminently collapse. I've not read anywheere of this being found, except in bikes used constantly off road.

Which is why I put the onus back onto my dealer who told me they did not have the parts and had no idea when they would.

I suggested that they (the dealer) inspect my bike and all others affected periodically in the interim to ensure they were still safe to ride.

2 days later the parts arrived and my bike was booked in.

The bike had already had the tolerance check completed back in July so had booked this date well in advance to make sure the new collars would be fitted..... turned up and was told that the parts are still not available so they would do the checks (again).

Well, at least the bike got a free wash and I did take an RT & K1600 out for a test ride (wouldn't swap the GSA in for either of them)

What's the score with them... they seem to have been out of stock for months, whereas clearly others here are getting theirs from other dealers?

Yep... Vines in Guildford. Don’t know what’s going on. was told that those who booked back in June are only just getting the parts in. I may be waiting some time.

Finally had a set of Conti Road Attack 3's fitted and had the forks checked.... I'm told its on the "list" to be done. Once I'd left the dealership I noticed that the black caps/covers at the top are missing. Now, I'm not at all tech minded so my SFQ is... "Is this an issue whilst waiting for the modification or is it just a cosmetic thing?"
