Doesnt it strike you odd, that BMW are handling this differently in separate markets ? (Bearing in mind the design of the part is common across the world?)

So we witness recalls of GS bikes in those where litigation might be a cost risk, (USA) but not in others? (CPJS described this on a previous page)

People completely over reacting to this. The service campaign will probably only reach 30% of the intended bikes as many would have been sold secondhand with no way of informing the new owners and many owners just won't bother. I expect dealers will do the fix on all GS's that come in for scheduled services though as it is workshop hours that can be billed.

I booked my 2017 GSA in last week for another fuel tank warranty related issue and the dealer mentioned he would do this stanchion fix which takes 2 hrs. Am I still riding my bike as intended over the next 2 weeks before it goes into the dealer?...of course yes. The stanchion issue seems very low risk....at a guess probably related to a combination of rough riding conditions and metal fatigue. Just take 5 mins to peel bak the rubbers and inspect for a gap.

As a note this is NOT a Recall!

A Service Campaign is something that can be done to upgrade/repair, but is not considered mandatory or a safety issue. Basically, your vehicle is fine to use, but when its at the dealer you may want to have them do this.

A recall is either a voluntary, or federally mandated order for the manufacturer to repair something because it has been deemed a safety issue. These are faults that should be repaired because they pose a potentially dangerous malfunction.

One could argue that this is safety related and shouldn't be a service campaign, but rather a voluntary recall, however I am sure the marketing dept thought to be proactive and start a service campaign before it possibly became a mandatory recall which would make headlines and bad publicity.

Well, I just had a look at mine and it's all perfect, like new under the rubber covers.

A bit like the rest of my bike, no corrosion etc at all.

I do look after it though, none of this " I ride it and clean it once a year " nonsense !

If a fat, off-roading 100kg tosser + a 240kg GS get a few feet of air at 30mph and the twat lands it front wheel down into a pot hole, then I am not surprised something goes snap!

Why is everyone being so defensive about this issue? like its a personal insult the bike may have an inherent design floor. The facts are, that people have had crashes due to stanchion failures and the bike should be checked and rectified if it cant be used as intended. BMW promote off roading the GS with the off road school, the GS Trophy and the 'spirit of GS' videos where the new rally is ragged around various off road situations in various countries. Not to mentioned, is sold as a world crosser. So yeah if a tosser jumps a bike and the forks break or they land a wheelie badly and the forks break thats wrong. totally wrong.

mine`s a 2016. some offroading but I don`t treat it like my trials bike. no issues.

it takes 20 seconds to have a look and keep an eye on. if you think its a problem tell your dealer. if not don`t worry, keep an eye on it and they will do any recall work at next service i`m sure.

thats my humble point of view.

My dealer told me today its not a recall but a check when the bikes in for service or work! But i will pop mine in for a visual check before im on holiday next week.

Crotchrocket, defensive seems the name of the game here from Hilltopping ( never understood that little debacle) but who knows. I'm sure BM will sort it out but I ain't buying another one ( it would be a second hand one anyway). Hey we had a Holliday cottage on Luing there was a bloke on an old Greeves who used his bike in the slate quarries there and every year we saw him bunny hopping, jumping, perhaps BM should look at sixties Brit trials bikes. Oh know, I'll bring down the defence mechanism. Hey guys surely we're happy to get his sorted or at least have an explanation the guy that had a very bad off deserves that from the BM techs.

You misunderstand I think - it's not about being defensive, it's more about not going off at half-cock and exaggerating before the real facts are known. The internet is a double edged sword it effectively disseminates useful information but equally it so easily becomes a rumour mill that gets totally out of hand.

On page eight or so one of the South African bike(s) has some pictures, one of which being the
damage done to the front wheel a few days before the forks gave way.

That front wheel took a hit.

The cerebrally challenged "engineer" (though he is nothing of the sort) ... can't fathom why BMW respond with differing vigour in differing markets. ( for the identical bikes)

If you really want to get into the back and beyond, you really need to hit up Lidl. Theres often a lot of wildlife hanging around outside the stores, too.
