French Alps (but maybe Germany, too)

OK guys, enough.

I believe it was a genuine mistake from Udders, who I guess was trying to do nothing more than offer an alternative, should Doc change his mind or in case he was looking for other ideas before next summer.

Pee taken. End of story.

Doc, so far in this thread there have been assorted suggestions, all spread across a huge area of what is sort of the south east corner of France.

In very simple terms:

a. You have decided on Annecy as your first base, with Castellane as your second.

b. You want somewhere between the two for a stop.

c. There are two classic routes north to south, which are:

1. Route des Grande Alpes

2. Route Napoleon

d. As you can see from these very simplified maps, the two routes do not overlap; they run parallel to each other. One starts in near enough Geneva and passes (with a loop) through Annecy, then heads off through several of the places suggested in this thread, before reaching the Mediterranean at Menton. The other starts south of Annecy in Grenoble and passes through Castellane, before reaching the sea at Cannes. Menton is about 40 miles east of Cannes, with Nice near enough between the two.

e. With these two very simple maps, you should be able to work out where is halfway between all sorts of places and start to plan your holiday accordingly.

f. As you have set aside quite a lot of days to ‘Do the French Alps’ I’d suggest, going down the Route Napoleon, which will tick off two of the popular ‘Must do’ spots, being Annecy and Castellane. Then I’d come back up the Route des Grande Alpes, and tick off a few more.
What a sound advice Richard!!! :clap

Almost tempted to do that myself.

With mapped information above, @Doc can simply type in the names of the cities/towns/villages into MRA and have him self a very easy holiday route to enjoy. Do 150-250 miles per day and book hotels between. What not to like?!

I know we did…. And parts of it last year.

I was just referring to how simple @Wapping had made it for @Doc to get himself sorted without being diverted to places…

That's why I ask on here.
I have no problem asking and taking advice from people who know more than me.
Even if generally my trip stuff goes slightly adrift now and again.

Oh yeah, Wangerland! :p

There are people on here that have far more travel related wisdom than I will ever have and it is great to be able to contribute to said advice, even if my personal knowledge of the subject is nowhere near on same level.

A contribution (within the topic of cause) from multiple sources, does allow for variables in people’s abilities, timescale and much more. It is a great source to have at a click of a few keys…

The boss likes this place for Annecy. Is it worth staying a couple of nights there before moving on to Castellane ?
Good location that hotel. You can walk into the old town from there and also to a beach area of the lake for a swim. I haven't stayed in that hotel though, only the Municipal campsite nearby.

Yes 2 nights there is a good idea, or maybe more. You are also close to the local mountain called Semnoz there which has great views from the top including Mont Blanc in the distance on a clear day.

Ah but nobody had been to Wangerland.
