When braking from higher speeds i am experiencing juddering at the front end of the bike. I assume that one of the front discs is warped. I would have hoped that the discs would last longer than 9K miles, i can't imagine what else the problem can be. I have been quoted £430 for the parts from BMW (two discs and two sets of pads plus fixing bolts), Can anyone point me in the right direction for a more competitive price?

Wipe a thin film of water soluable engineering blue on the brake discs. On the centerstand, spin the wheel & apply the brake. Look for a radial wave pattern, if you see... you need to skim ( not sure if applicable on Beemer discs) or change... Rinse off residual engineering blue before riding.

Sadly, it's not uncommon.

Mine were replaced under warranty at 6,000 miles and I just replaced them again this weekend at 31,000.

The good news is that St Eptoe (Steptoe) of this parish usually has replacement discs and pads at a fraction of the WBM price.

You will need to suscribe to the forum in order to send him a private message (PM) - well worth the measly £12 it costs - welcome to the site :thumb2

Hi

The advice I received was as follows:

1) When stopped, do not keep the brakes on - use the rear brake if really needed (they do not get as hot as the front). This is the main cause of the warping (supposedly race cars are not parked with their handbrakes on after a race due to the heat transfer warping the discs)
2) My servo also seems to have been adjusted to give "less power" at a recent service (brakes are not as sharp as they used to be...)

Front brake judder - rear brake issue

Check the state of your rear brake also.

i spent many hours riding withouth using the front brake in norway, not fun with the galcial valleys, end ended up swapping my front disks for new at a dealer on Bodo.

all was fine untill a hundred or so miles later, i then discovered it was actually my rear brake disc that was warped and vibrating the whole bike.

the link brakes hid the issue and caused undue work!

in short, check your rear as that may have gone and the symptom may point you at the front.

I have same problem, though when having new front tyre fitted the fitter showed me the run out on the disc when the wheel was on the balancing machine. Pidcocks agreed to replace both discs under warranty, but pointed out that BMW will only repalce upto 10.000 miles -after that it's classed as "wear and tear" If you've only done 9.000 then I would insist on replacement under warranty.
