Anyone out there with thoughts on a cure for this noisy problem?
Feels and sounds like the whole damn bikes gonna fall apart.
The only cure I've found is to remove the pads ,apply copper grease to rear and re insert.Works admirably for about 1,000 miles(depending on how often I wash the bike)then back to rattling.Only good point being you cant hear the gearchange!.
Haynes Manual mentions pad retaining springs but never seen them on/in the caliper or with any new sets of pads.
Lost by previous owner? What do they look like?Where can I get them and are they of any use anyway?

I thought the pads had the anti rattle springs riveted to them, I know the 1150's up to 2001 had the springs fixed to the pads.

My 02 1150 has separate springs not attached to the pads.

Not sure about the 1100 though.

R U using EBC HH Pads as I am and they rattle too. Fitting BwM pads gives you back the springs I am led to believe. But I rather like the performance of the EBC pads. So I live with the rattle. I can only here it at low speeds, or for some reason if its been pissing down I can hear it at higher speeds to. So bad once in fact I thought I'd broken down....

That whole brake pad rattle thing is a bit weird isn't it. I thought that something was loose inside the headlight or the dash and was looking for ages before I asked the dealer and he told me that 'they all do that sir'

My discs are quite worn and as someone (Vern I think) pointed out earlier, the disc mounting spacers rattle a lot as they are quite worn.

You could try replacing the mounts on their own, I don't think they are that expensive and that might help.

there should also be a flattish piece of metal behind the pads in the calliper which functions as a spring, your pads will rattle if this is missing

You will find that if you leave EBC rattle type pads in, that you will wear the holding pins.

I went to the aftermarket EBC pads and thought I could live with the rattle. Upon a close inspection of the front brakes during a service, I noticed that the pin which holds everything in was wearing down where the pads were constantly rubbing (and rattling).

The cure was to rotate the pins 180º replace the EBC pads with originals and firstly have a quiet bike again, secondly know that the retaining pins weren't being worn away with the constant rattling on dirt roads.

They don't rattle from the factory for two reasons. One, it would drive customers mad. Two, believe it or not, that rattle is almost at the limit of noise for the EPA ride past noise test.

Mines a 98 1100GS by the way.

Mick

Yes Ritchie,EBC HH jobs fitted, certainly no sign of the flat metal'spring' though gutsi.Asearch on JAMES SHERLOCK sites shows originals with anti rattle springs as suggested.
So anyone with recommendations re.the best replacement for pads front and rear on the 1100 when I go to do them?

Ferodo, from Mororworks. Put mine in about 1000 miles ago and they're at least as good as the originals. They have anti-rattle plates on the back and they're nice and quiet.

For the rear pads there are now some new aftermarket ones that I have fitted.

These pads have one half of the pads thicker by about 1mm. This is a good feature, one side wears quicker than the other and you are left with a set of pads that are completely worn out on one side only, but with plenty of meat on the other half!

I haven't worn them out yet but my guessing is that they will wear out at roughly the same time.

Mick.

I sell Ferodo platinum pads for £12 a set, with the springs attached -- does no one look in the discount thread anymore ?

SILENCE BY FERODO! (and Motorworks).Ordered and paid before your reply Steptoe, keep you in mind next time.
A bit awkward to fit.Once again I ask for your combined expertise.
I assume it correct that the pin goes through the opening between the two springs which cross over to make an arch and that the subsequent pressure thereon does the anti rattle job?
Being blessed with 10 thumbs managed to get a little copper grease on the friction surface.Wiped it off,can I take it that any residue will eventually burn off and give full braking efficiency?
Lastly, whilst front wheel turns ok on the stand theres more resistance than before (given the space taken up by the new pads). Is this normal and will it free off when they bed in, without wearing the new pads excessively or do I need to remove some fluid from the front resevoir?
Test run showed improved braking and no obvious resistance when accelerating.
