Front wheel bearing replacement

My rumbling front wheels bearing on my 38K R1150GSA was picked up on an MOT test recently, it appears that some BMW tools are required to remove the old and replace with new. Anyone had theirs replaced recently? and recommendations for someone to do the job, relatively convenient to East Anglia, to do the job? john

Yes, had thought of them, went there a while back re another problem, nice guys, ex Linds, depends if they have got the right tools to do the job, I dont think its a common issue, not like the rear end! The wheels is out ready to go, if I get a chance today I might call in on them. john

Can anyone tell me the bearing codes? I need to do mine sometime soon but I can only see the code (6204LU) on one bearing, the other must have the code written on the hub side. (Yes, that is after removing the speedo drive plate.) My plan was to get two the same and hope the same size bearing is used on both sides of the hub. Eyeball measurement suggests they're the same.

I can confrim that a special tool is needed. A special hammer.

Bearing Number

The larger bearing on the speedo drive side is made by INA and has the following info etched on it :-

INA 45 3205 2RS 972 V 05 05

BMW Part 36 31 2 310 972

I think this is possibly a roller bearing or double row brg. I had to replace the smaller bearing a few years ago just before leaving on holiday but I didn't have this larger one available so ordered it later to change in future but although I've since replaced the oil seal at the speedo drive side I've still not replaced this bearing as it still feels like new(120K+) - so I still have a new one in the garage
I mention all this as you might find the same, and only need to change the smaller one(6204?)
As others have said, no special tools required - but I think I had to remove the speedo side bearing first to get the other one out - the spacer can only be twisted out of position at that end - I'm sure Steptoe can confirm this or otherwise

Why just not go to a bearing shop like SKF with the bearings in hand and they give you replacements after measuring them

That is something I may well do, but if I know what bearings are needed I can have them in my garage and the whole process is more convinient for me, with the bike out of use for less time. HTH ;-)

Mine are sorted now, went to LINDS BMW and negotiated, both bearings and seal replaced for £88. Not many bikes being brought in for service in this weather. Thanks Linds, nice job? And no need for a hammer!!!

I dropped the front wheel off and they put in the two new bearings and replaced the seal, I thought £88 all inclusive, parts & labour was a good deal, I`m happy anyway, going to put the back on in a minute!

I moved to Mellis (north Suffolk) from Lincs last year and contacted Mr Scriminger re: KRF, Steve speaks well of him. He sorted my leaking final drive at a good price. From my limited experience I would recommend KRF.

I am also changing the front wheel bearings and I discover that skf 6204-2rsh which was given me by the local bearings dealer have a thinner inner race than the INA/FAG one. In fact skf inner race is aprox 1.5 mm thinner than the original INA. Of course it will fit but could this lead to some future problems? Or perhaps I am worrying for nothing?
