I`ve just done a 3k journey in the company of a Boxer Cup. He has an 18 litre tank so I assumed I`d be topping up my 2001 1150GS whilst he filled up at fuel stops.
He consistently used 10% less fuel than me (we were both 2 up with luggage) which meant we had about the same range. He was rarely more than 12" from my back wheel so riding style could`nt account for it.
I`m curious as to why an 1100S should be so frugal with the fuel?

yeah easy........the boxer cup is designed for racing obviously, so it's meant to be aerodynamic...the GS is designed to scare old ladies and cuts through the air like a brick......

You may even find the Drag coefficient for the two listed somewhere.......that might be interesting.

50 R uses less than GS

Me & daddy did a 1500m tour of the west coast of scotland in may this year Ive got an 02 1150R & dad has a 52 1150GS & at every fill up he put in over £3 more per tank than me yes we filled up at the same times & same petrol same distance between fill ups & both fully loaded so ive no idea.
???????????
I would have thought they would use the same amount

I`ve checked BMWs website and their consumption figures for 100km @ 120km/hour are:

1150R 5.71
1150GS 5.71
Boxer cup 5.01

That explains it then.

I think it's simpler than aerodynamics in that the S is geared higher than the GS so for the same road speed the engine will be spinning slightly slower.

after the gentle stroll on the ampshire rideout last week, very sedate through the new forest etc etc, i carried on riding like BM owner till the fuel light came on, i did 254 miles and put 19 litres of fuel in, thats around 60 per gallon, but its very very boring .

:) :)

Do you have the standard 10% optomistic speedo (which means you did 55mpg) or the optional accurate mechanism.

Optomistic setup, which means as well as only 55mpg, i was driving at the sedately speed of 34mph.

that must make me a commitee member of the BMoaners club.
