Fuel consumption for 04 compared to 05

I've decided to "take a chance" and get a 1200 soon - I was torn between the 1150 Adv or even another 1150 but the weight memories came flooding back.

As I don't want to take the hit with a new one and would prefer one "tested" with a fair mileage on it I'll be looking at an 04 or 05. I've just read that the 05 had updated electronics that cut fuel consumption from 6ltr to 5.5ltr at 75mph. Can anyone confirm if this is bollocks? (the figures are apparently from the BMW handbooks).

Snoopy why not just go back to where it all started and buy a bike that will stand up to being owned by you.

There were various different fuelmaps used in the early days and 1200's had a proper step in the power delivery and better performance IMO, my early 04 one was far faster then either of my late ones.

05 and on bikes were almost linear in their power delivery which might explain the fuel consumption theory.

Back to the real world, if i had the choice between a secondhand 04 1200 or an 1150 i'd take the 1150 any time, 04 1200's had far too many issues to be a sensible buy if you fancy piling the miles on.

As much as I loved the 1150 it was too heavy with all the gear on ... the intention is to get a 1200 and carry a few spares.

Also want a twin spark for 7% better economy which at today's prices works out at quite a lot over a year with it being my only transport. That means a 2003 GS or newer.

I'm torn between it at the moment but leaning towards the 1200. The other big thing going for the 1200 is the chipped ECU having had my last two bikes hot wired.

I will probably remove the ABS and servos as a matter of course.

It would be nice to fit carbs as well and junk the EFI but I feel fuel consumption might suffer to much for that to be attractive to you.

Think the centre stand changed 06 (mines 05 and has the old skool stand).

Fuel maps changed (not the hardware) but then any dealer serviced GS will have the latest map regardless of age of manufacture as they are updated at service time.

The FD plug came in 06 or 07 I think - hardly essential, just makes changing the oil a little easier.

Remove ABS and servos!?! - only you could think of doing that

Am I alone in thinking that 'improved' fuel consumption on most vehicles is due to the manufacturers' increased skill at mapping to give them the best result on the EC test cycles rather than real riding / driving? It may be that the 'improvement' between 04 & 05 model years doesn't mean anything on the road

If you want a 1150/1200 with better economy - don't ride like a twat
If you don't want abs - buy an old 1150
If you think it's to heavy - don't fall off

do the maths - what's a percieved 7% improvement really worth (annual milage/mpgX cost of fuel) and if the answer is really worth taking into account... go the whole hog and buy a new 650 twin

There's a sure lot of resentment over the 1200. ChrisKelley's 04 did 42k without an issue. Ahk now I'm rethinking.

I have a 05 with just under 30k,I have had no major problems at all,as for mpg. depends on how you like to twist the throttle
