Fuel filter life

How often should the fuel filter be changed if it is not changed on a mileage basis? Do they deteriorate over time?
I know some cars ( eg BMW Mini ) have a long lasting filter that doesn't need changing and is fitted for the life of the vehicle!

The filters are broadly the same, the only difference I can see is that most car ones are about five or six times the size of the BMW item, I think the book says that the bike one should be changed every 24K, sometimes a dirty one will make the fuel pump whine. (as will being low on fuel)

If you go with 24k as a maximum but change more regularly if you travel the wilder parts of the world (Hull for instance), you won't go far wrong.

As to deteriorating over time - who knows. Change it if it bothers you

I've taken a fuel filter to 42k with no problems.Depends on the quality of fuel you put through it.Triumph and Ducati use the same fuel filter.
The "Triumph" branded version costs a fair bit more and they recommend changing it every 12k miles.
As someone said,a noisy fuel pump is a sign its working harder to draw the fuel through.

If you have a BMW Mini I would have a look at the fitted for life fuel filter. The one I replaced on SWMBOs Mini was more a solid block of black stuff.
