Just bought a second hand 1150GS, quick question.....the fuel light stays on and no bar indicators show - although tonight for a short time the light went off and one bar came up. Few minutes later petrol light came back on and bar went. The tanks full before anyone asks !!!!
Cheers............

Is the tank really full?

If it is full to the brim then it must be a sensor problem. I'm sure someone will be along to help shortly.

I find I get a very inaccurate reading on the guage if the bike is on the motorway the fuel light will come on because there is alot of fuel in the lobs (sp) of the tank. When entering the first set of corners afterwards the guage re-adjusts.

Check the electrical connectors between the sensor and the rest of the bike electrics.

Have a look under the tank and follow the wires from it. When you find an in-line connector, pull it and clean out the crap!

Worked for my temperature sensor

GS Tanks

The world of the GS tank and fuel guage are a complete mystery to me. I fill mine up to the brim and whilst doing so I'm regulary rocking the bike back and forth to get as much as possible in. Switch the ignition on and the fuel guage still has the top bar missing!!! I have had the ignition on whilst filling and at one stage the guage showed all the bars. Anyway, enough of that.

I think I've seen a thread about this problem of yours Steve, I seem to remember it could be to do with the connectors on the guage that need cleaning and then smothered in vaseline.

Good luck!

fuel gauge

wait until the tank is low on fuel (using the trip meter as a guide) then remove tank - remove the fuel gauge sender from inside edge of tank.
the sender is very simple in operation in that all it does is move a contact up and down a strip of contacts depending on how full the tank is. clean up all contacts and check operation by reconecting multi plug before refitting into tank. this is a common problem apparently and i was given this method of remedy by the tech. guys at my dealer. ;)

So when is the fuel light supposed to come up 2 bars? 1 Bar? on mine it does not come up at all if the fuel is run down to below 1 bar? but if you switch it off and then on (engine that is) the light will come up on 1 bar????????????????
I guess i have never seen it as a problem as you no how low you are by the bars, but if anyone can throw any light on the problem i would be grateful;) :beerjug:

Fuel Light

I've only run my Adv. low on fuel twice (180-195miles-no big tank here) I normally chicken out ,
my guage goes to 1 bar then no bars and still no fuel light!!!!!
It's probably the float for the guage set at different levels from bike to bike,I'll try something really scientific next time it runs low,I'll stop and open the tank cap, and shake the bike to see how much (or little) is in there,or just ride till it dies!
At this rate I'll never blow the bulb for the fuel light anyway!!!:D

Fuel light on

I have had all these problems on my bike since it was serviced at 24,000 miles and the fuel filter was changed. I complained to the dealer and he sent a van to collect it and deliver the courtesy bike.
I also watched the guage whilst filling up and all the bars came on but went out after about 250yds, the light did not come on untill all the bars were gone and then some.
They fixed the guaging and set up the fuel warning light to the

BMW spec which is apparently 5ltr.

Phew! Never seen the light until Saturday! Your answer matches my experience. Did Cardiff to Hythe in 3h02m (225miles on the odometer) and was hammering along and the bars went from 3 to 2 and then 1 in about 10 miles (M20 J10 to J11) and the light came on.... never knew it had a bulb before!

Anyway it stayed on around the big roundabout and went off after the 2nd one on the A20.... and the bars went up to 2 again!

Generally, how much is left in the tank when it's down to 1 bar on the gauge?

I really need to carry a small can of petrol and run the bugger out to see! At 193.8 miles I managed to get 17 litres in right up the the top of the filler hole (not the bit where the cap fits!!)
