Fuel pump controller

I have been reading several posts about the fuel pump controller failure and was wondering if there is anything can be done to help prevent this component failing. I have pulled of the black cover on mine and there seems to be a fair bit of dirt and a bit of corrosion as well. Bike is an 04 with 24k on the clock. Any advise would be great.
 
There seem to be various theories as to why they fail but no conclusive answer.

These range from corrosion due to the sitting being a water trap, over heating and thus failing or a series of batches of faulty controllers.

IMO the fact that yours is still going strong would suggest that it will carry on doing so. Of course, it won't do any harm to clean up the connections and apply some electrical grease/Vaseline to help protect them.

For further peace of mind carry a spare controller with you or make up a lead to take it out of the circuit as a get you home measure (if you do a search in this section there is a thread, by Wapping I think, on how to make up the lead).

Nowt you can do about it I believ except have a fix or a replacement on hand in case it packs in.

There are some "get you home" fixes but a number of riders carry spares if going farther afield on adventures.

Have a search around the postings for fixes.
 
All the faulty ones should have been changed under warranty and/or goodwill. It way be worth getting hold of your local dealer and they should be able to tell you if yours has been done or not.
 
Thank you for your replies. I think i will ring the dealer as suggested to see if it was changed under a recall.

if you dont know its been done recently I recommend you undo the screws and lift the FPC to see if water has got into the area below and corroded the wires etc, (another reason why you might be left stranded) if it has you need a new seal on the FPC probably

also to check the top area every time you wash the bike and make sure no water sits in there, I always stuff a leather over mine to keep watter out, dont permanently block the slots on the cover FPCs get warm, well mine does
 
I passed an R1200R abandoned on the M27 at 2pm this afternoon in the snow. I would have stopped but I was in the fast lane in the works motor and by the time I had clocked it, I had no chance to stop. Presumably a victim of FPC failure. It can happen anytime, anywhere. Be prepared. When my FPC failed on my old 04 bike I wasn't. Luckily an Aussie mate came to my aid but that's another story.
 
Have a look at what is fitted to your bike. The latest version is black afaik.
 
Or maybe just run out of fuel, maybe had a puncture or was just too cold and though sod it, I'll walk home:D

Maybe, maybe not.

The point I'm making is that you can never predict these failures, they just happen. They WILL leave you stranded unless you plan ahead. I now have a 'get you home' power lead thanks to Wappings advice, I keep it on the bike so I no longer need to worry.

Gave me a PIPE CLEANER,
Drill a small hole in the black cover in the front,just above the lip,
Insert said cleaner,but coil some of it first inside.looking downward's
Put cover back over carfully
Pipe cleaner will now sit in the puddle inside,
Bend outer end downward's and below the inside puddle,
Hay presto,you now have a drain pipe for the water.
Cappilary action takes over
It will leave the crap behind,but atleast it will drain water slowly.
 
Some cotton string doubled over a one or two times and pulled through a neoprene tube also works for wicking out water. Being stiffer its easier to tie down.
 
So where is the best place to get one of those bypass leads then?

You need to get hold of an old FPC. I've tried buying the individual plugs, but could only find 1 type. 2 different types are needed.

Info on how to make one up is HERE. I've saved it in my bookmarks/favourites so if I ever get an old FPC I won't have to search hard to find this link again.
