My bike broke down this morning. 2008 GSA, it felt like a fuel issue so I filled it up thinking maybe the guage had failed, sit would run every so often for a few minutes then die. After a great workout pushing it home I connected my GS911 and have

code 10168: Fuel pump System faulty.
The fault has occurred 7 times (seems to correspond to home nay times it died before I got it home)
logistics counter 40
Symptom: No or low value
MIL set: No.

I suspect this is either the fuel pump controller or the fuel pump, any idea which is more likely?

Bypass the controller.
If it starts then it's the controller.
If it doesn't start it could well be the pump.

Thanks, just done a search and found lots of info on this! Any idea how long I can run with the by pass in place? Do I really need to replace the FPC, it just looks like it acts as solid state relay to me?

Yes to both

Yes its a solid state relay

Yes you need to replace it as it pulses the pump rather than the 1150 design of constant running

If you run the pump constantly it will wear out prematurely as it is not in the same league of construction as the 1150s!

According to a (very long) thread on AdvRider.com, the mark space ratio changes according to fuel tank level. When its full there is more space between pulses, so the pump runs less hard. At about 25% the pump runs harder to be sure the venturi pump on the fuel return can empty the right hand side of the tank.

I believe it's true because while I knew my fuel pump was getting weak (subtle stuttering when tank near empty), it always emptied the tank. The fuel strip was broken so the tank level read empty - pump running hard all the time. When I removed the fuel strip, the bike ran out of fuel with the RHS still full. Capacity was down by 7 or 8 litres. A new fuel pump solved the tank emptying problem.

You can test this by unplugging the fuel gauge sender next to the fuel pump controller. If the bike runs out with fuel in the tank you have a weak fuel pump.

With a bit of fettling, this fitted fine. I had to re-use the OEM outlet hose so be careful to not damage it when you remove the old pump.

just got home and tested it. Seems to work OK now but have bypassed the FPC and will order a new one this evening.

Thanks all for your quick responses. I am back on the road in no time.

It has 25K on the clock. I ran it hard up the hill with the FPC bypassed to make sure it could deliver enough fuel and it seems to work so have ordered and will fit a new FPC as soon as I get back home. Before I fit the new one I will run it up the hill again with the old one to satisfy myself it is the part to replace. I will make a bypass lead to keep in my tool bag once its all sorted.
