Fuel pump question.

When the ignition is turned on,without starting the engine, the fuel pump runs just enough to bring the system up to pressure then the Motronic shuts it off.
Once the engine is started,the fuel pump runs continuously and uses the pressure regulator to maintain a constant pressure,and also allowing excess fuel,(pressure),to return to the tank.
Can anyone confirm this is correct?
