IMHO the black cover does not stop the water, it simply means you can't see it/drain the water out.

It's not the black cover that's the problem. Which black cover....? 
It's the blue/green gasket on the DM controller that fails and lets in water. There was a recall on a run of VIN No.'s to replace the gasket which had been incorrectly fitted at the factory. My '04 bike wasn't within the recall and the gasket was still incorrectly fitted. The DM controller on mine failed about 6 months out of warranty. BMW paid for the part.

The GSA doesn't have a cover. That photo shows the older model of this relay - the newer ones have the cooling fins at 45 degrees.

When was the relay changed? Had one fail yesterday.. Bike was built Dec'06

Is that sloping sideways at 45 degrees?
On my third at the mo. One failed on the old gasket, and one on the new gasket. Now I carry a spare and hope to prove sod's law is correct.
